While the weather down here was pretty calm, it was a little different in the thumb area. The first part of this video is a tornado which was videoed by Lieutenant Doug Confer of the Deckerville Fire Department. The ending is the path on the ground captured by MSP Aviation. Just another reason why it is important to take shelter when a tornado warning is issued.

A week ago an EF-3 tornado touched down in a highly populated part of St. Louis. The tornado sirens weren’t sounded. The NWS issued a warning with only 11 minutes of lead time before the tornado touched down. 5 people lost their lives. There is technology available to prevent these things from happening. A must watch from start to finish with a calm sound of rain to tornado sirens being activated to a tornado moving through the area! Things escalated quickly and serves as a reminder why to always take shelter during bad weather and especially when warnings are issued! The individual who filmed, we were told by her daughter; "She ended up with a sprained ankle from the wall falling on her but was ok and blessed to be alive"! She furthered said; "Mississippi weather is always bad so people in my town of Morton could not imagine a tornado coming through. There has not been one in that town in over 100 years or more. Also, the tornado was not supposed to be in that area. It was predicted to go in another direction. So if you do have bad weather please take cover!" This man is in charge of the tornado alarm. Anytime there is a strong tornado approaching, it’s his job to drive up here and manually activate the tornado alarm. You would think they would invest in a safer method of warning people about the impending danger as so many things could go wrong with this method. What happens if he gets blocked or caught by the tornado on the way to sound the alarm. Shouldn’t the controls for this be indoors somewhere?

What's a "wedge" tornado? And how rare are "megawedge" tornadoes? There is no technical definition of a "wedge." Storm chasers consider wedge tornadoes to tornadoes that appear wider than they are tall. (For the tornado's height, they use the distance from the ground to the cloud base – AKA the "lifting condensation level". True tornado circulations extend up to 30,000 or 40,000 feet into the storm, so no tornadoes are *actually* wider than they are tall. We just can only see the part of the tornado that hangs down from the cloud base.) The tornado you see below occurred in Harlan, Iowa on April 26, 2024. It's the biggest I have ever seen. It was 1.1 miles wide, and had winds estimated by mobile Doppler radar up to 224 mph! Only 1 or 2 in 1,000 tornadoes grows larger than a mile wide – at least according to National Weather Service survey data. Realistically, that number might be significantly higher when counting inflow winds and ill-defined edges of the tornadic circulation, especially in rain-wrapped environments. (Where does the "tornado" end and the wind "around" the tornado begin?) MEGAWEDGE tornadoes are informally considered anything wider than 1.5 miles in diameter. The National Weather Service has only "officially" logged 30 megawedge tornadoes out of the 84,000+ in their database. The BIGGEST tornado on record occurred in El Reno, Oklahoma on May 31, 2013. It was 2.6 miles across! That said, researchers found evidence that the Mulhall, Okla. tornado on May 3, 1999 had a peak "core circulation" about 4.3 miles wide. In other words, that's the diameter of the 96 mph or greater winds. Let's hope 2025 doesn't feature any megawedges! If there are, we'll be streaming them in the MyRadar Weather app!

ON THIS DATE IN 2011: A generational tornado outbreak for Alabama. A total of 62 tornadoes, responsible for 252 deaths and over 2,000 injuries. The loss of life came despite excellent and timely warnings for every tornado; we learned that day that physical science is not enough. We must continue to weave social and behavioral science knowledge into the warning process. This day will haunt me until the day I die. For us in the weather enterprise, it was our finest day, and our worst day. We continue to mourn the 252 precious people that died April 27, 2011. Never forget.
