The song became a major hit in the United States, peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1969, the first of five singles to peak at No. 2 for the group.

It was also the first title John wrote in his songbook, that he eventually referenced when he wrote the song after receiving his honorary discharge from the army.

Great song which cemented CCR as my favourite band at the time after hearing I Put a Spell On You, Susie Q & I think I heard Good Golly Miss Molly too before Proud Mary. Still my favourite band today
