I remember watching that fight. Nobody thought Tommy was unbeatable he could chunk & swat but his STAMINA was always his downfall especially against top tier opponents. R.I.P. Duke!

That referee was too slow to stop the fight.
Tommy knocked the hill out of Ray Mercer for most of that fight. But Mercer had one of the best chins on the planet. That knockout was one of the coldest I have ever seen. Mercer admitted later on that he knew Morrison would wear out because he was on steroids.
BS… at his very best Tommy Morrison was a mediocre fighter. Slow, lumbering, obvious. He had a solid punch no question but he didn’t have great defense and telegraphed his punches. Couple rounds into a fight they figured him out and could beat him.
Pride walks tallest right before the canvas. One clean shot… and the legend becomes a lesson. Gloves don’t lie.

It’s because Ray Mercer had a concrete jaw!!! And he knew that “Tommy Gun” would never get more than 4-5 rounds of swinging, and it worked perfectly. And Mercer hit like a mule kicked. Problem was nearly all top fighters dodged Ray after this human violation.
I remember this fight that that’s when boxing was amazing. You still had that second tier of well-known heavyweights, which like Michael Moorer was supposed to be part of, Mercer, aging Holmes.
