some of the people in the comment section have never ran cross-country, and it shows. this is a competition these athletes have been preparing for all season long. part of the race is pacing. if the struggling athlete needs medical attention, there are others around. It's a race.

He finished the race, on his own, and didn’t quit. Not particularly glorious, but a tremendous testament to his character. As for the other racers, this is not a charity event. They were absolutely correct to finish their own races to the best of their ability.
