The large white dog was the first to charge forward, pushing other dogs aside with its sheer physical strength. Yet, despite its advantage, it never managed to reach the finish. The goal was right in front of it. But reaching it required moving away from it first. The dog couldn’t figure that out, nor could it overcome the walls blocking its path. The smallest black dog also failed to reach the finish. It could see the goal, but kept getting pushed around by the other dogs, preventing it from making progress. It also seemed unusually aware of the dogs around it, almost as if it were being considerate of them. When the sole objective is to move forward, that kind of consideration can become a disadvantage. And this shows how much the environment itself can influence the outcome. The black dog that finished first was lucky. All it really did was keep moving forward without turning back. And by chance, the path it chose led to the finish. Had it taken the opposite route and reached a dead end, the outcome might have been completely different. Still, there’s something valuable about maintaining a sense of direction. It takes a certain kind of determination to keep going, even when it means temporarily moving farther away from your goal. The second-place black dog was fascinating too. It discovered an alternative solution: climbing over the wall. And more importantly, it had the physical ability to actually pull it off. Having an idea is one thing. Being capable of executing it is another. This dog had both luck and ability on its side, making its result thoroughly well-deserved. The small brown dog that finished third was particularly impressive. It wasn’t tall enough to see the goal directly. Yet, relying on its sense of smell, it patiently worked through the maze, learning through trial and error until it finally found the correct path. Of all the approaches, this seemed like the most methodical and reliable way to solve the problem. And yet, it still didn’t finish first. That’s where things get interesting. The ability to consistently work your way toward the right answer isn’t necessarily the same as the ability to reach it faster than everyone else. Finishing first may depend on factors that ability alone cannot fully explain, such as luck, timing, and circumstance. The medium-sized brown dog that finished last was equally interesting. It started later than the others and initially wandered into a dead end in the opposite direction. But along the way, it discovered how to get over the walls. From that point on, it combined its sense of smell with its jumping ability and took an impressively efficient route to the finish. Had this dog started at the front, it might have finished with an overwhelming lead. But there’s another possibility. If it hadn’t gotten lost in the first place, perhaps it would never have discovered that it could jump over the walls. Maybe that’s where the strange relationship between experience, timing, and chance comes into play. What makes this experiment so fascinating is that finishing order doesn’t necessarily reflect intelligence or ability. Physical strength, judgment, environment, experience, and sheer luck. Even when everyone is pursuing the same goal, they aren’t necessarily starting with the same advantages or facing the same obstacles. The first to succeed isn’t necessarily the most capable, and the last to succeed isn’t necessarily the least capable. I think the same is true for humans. And finally, the cat… Well, that’s a cat for you.🐈
