From International Space Station, we have a unique vantage point to observe lightning storms from directly above them. Much like from the ground, they appear as rapid, intense flashes that are over as quickly as they started. But, with the help of handheld cameras and a bit of practice (and, admittedly, some luck), we can capture these intense flashes with a very high frame rate then slow them down to see how the lightning propagates. It's lightning, in slow motion. This is one that occurred over Indonesia on 6/28. I shot it for a half second at 1/120 frame rate, so, 60 separate frames. I then compiled those frames into two videos: the first, in real-time, and the second, slowed down so that each frame is a half second to highlight the progression of the flash. Note the incredible burst of light in one frame, which includes what is likely a TLE on the upper left. A TLE, or Transient Luminous Event, is an electrical discharge that happens in the upper atmosphere above lightning storms (if you haven’t seen Ferry Farhan TLE photo from last week, head over to her page). As their name implies, these are transient, or short lived, phenomena – it appeared in only one frame of the sequence, lasting for no more than 1/120th of a second. The last photo is that single frame. Absolutely incredible.

The Kankakee Supercell is one of the most unbelievable Storms I’ve seen in a long time. This Supercell was an absolute MONSTER. Kling 3.0 → Rally Multi-Shot ✅ Basically, text-to-video with object reference. PROMPT: Shot 1: Shaky rear backwards tracking shot as the kodak lancia drifts towards us. The lancia thunders by us exiting the frame momentarily. Shot 2: The camera perched high in the trees as we look down upon a ludcrious hairpin turn in the snow cover Fjord mountain roads. Suddenly we snap focuson in the distance we see a flash of black and color (the kodak lancia), like a phantom in the distance, thundering towards us. As it nears the apex of the turn It rear end fans out as it enters a perfect drift around the hairpin turn - kicking up a trail snow and ice from the rear tires - and accelerates through the other side of the run. Snow falling gently in the frame is out of focus - as we stay sharp on the car. Shot 3: Static mounted camera on the snow road captures a peaceful and serene moment as the snow gently drifts down with a haunting serenity. Suddenly, a flash black and color (the kodak lancia), like a phantom in the distance, thunders by in snap passing in and out of the frame quickly (barely visible).

IT LOOKED LIKE THIS OBJECT WAS HARVESTING LIGHTNING ⚡️ During an intense lightning storm, what appeared to be a stationary object remained in the same area as lightning repeatedly erupted around it. But here’s what caught everyone’s attention… Instead of the strikes appearing random, multiple bolts seemed to converge on the exact same target again and again. The shot of the T-Rex wrecking a bus in THE LOST WORLD is a perfect mix of practical stunts (a real bus rigged to implode at the point of impact as the stunt performers are blown out the other side) and ILM's incredible CG work. Not to mention that beautiful night lighting.

The actor is best known for his cult classic roles in films such as ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ and ‘Clue,’ as well as the first on screen portrayal of Stephen King’s ‘Pennywise’ the 1990 miniseries ‘It.’ He lived the last stretch of his life using a wheelchair after a debilitating stroke in 2012.
