(May 30, 2025) Fresno, California - Video shows suspect shot in ‘hostage situation’ near Fresno’s Manchester Center The Fresno Police Department released footage from an incident from April of a woman being shot in the head by an officer as she was holding a knife to a woman’s neck near Manchester Center in Fresno. On April 10, police say there was a “hostage situation” that began when a FAX bus driver saw a woman at around 10:30 a.m. near the FAX building holding a knife. An officer on patrol was nearby and responded when he found the woman, who was identified by police as 39-year-old Joanna Lopez, armed with a knife. She also had blood on her neck from a self-inflicted wound. The officer told bystanders to step out of the way and instructed Lopez to drop the knife. In the video, Lopez was seen not complying and began to walk toward a 68-year-old woman who had just departed from a FAX bus. She then grabbed the 68-year-old woman and used her as a shield. The officer on the scene told Lopez to drop the knife repeatedly and warned her that she may be shot. After telling Lopez multiple times to drop the knife, that’s when the officer discharged his gun and shot her in the head. At the time, she was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
