Can a real peace deal be made between Russian and Ukraine? Yesterday CNN asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about Trump’s “plan” to make a fair deal between Putin and Ukraine. Zelensky had quite the interesting response, saying: “We’re not ready [to give up territory to Russia]. But the question for Trump – or to someone else, maybe it’s not his idea – is ‘is the United States ready to give up territory after Putin has said he would use nuclear weapons?'" Zelensky then said, “After we negotiate with Putin, he will then give us his new list of ‘wishes." Does anyone really believe that 1) Putin would make a deal without getting some of Ukraine's land and 2) that he would actually hold up his end of the deal? Putin has shown over and over again that he only makes deals to get things, and as soon as he secures those things, he moves on to trying to get more.

I think the chances of a meeting between Zelensky and Putin before end of August is exactly zero. After that, extremely slim to none. A Putin-Zelensky summit is a fantasy of Trump’s. He appears to have misunderstood Putin or been misled by him. Lavrov said today, “Putin confirmed his readiness to continue direct Russian-Ukrainian negotiations that took place in Istanbul.” And that Putin was prepared to “raise the level of delegations.” But that is not Putin saying he is ready to meet Zelensky.
