The term of Parliament was extended from five years to six years. While Opposition leaders were in jail, the 42nd Constitutional Amendment was passed. It was during this period, when the Opposition was imprisoned, that the words "Socialist" and "Secular" were added. The Representation of the People Act was amended with retrospective effect so that no legal challenge could be made against the Prime Minister's election. Remember, that didn’t used to be considered impossible. We’ve had about 30 of them. Some of the things we take for granted as core to the Constitution—it’s right in there, the First Amendment, the Second Amendment—the word “amendment” means it wasn’t even in the original text. Amendments have always been a critically important part of how our Constitution is supposed to work. We just forgot about it. We amended our Constitution for prohibition. We changed our Constitution so you couldn’t have a beer. And then we thought that’s a bad idea, and we changed it back. Don’t tell me we can’t change the Constitution to get money out of politics.

India is home to many religions, philosophies and schools of thought. Yet as a Republic, we chose one text to guide our nation above all others: the Constitution of India. On Constitution Day, we remind ourselves that its survival rests on our collective courage. The values in the Preamble, including justice, liberty, equality and fraternity, are increasingly sidelined by those in power. Institutions meant to protect our freedoms are weakened, dissent is discouraged, and constitutional morality is treated as an inconvenience. At a time when democratic norms are under strain and the balance of power tilts dangerously, we must remember that the Constitution does not defend itself. It lives only when we stand up for it, uphold its spirit, and hold every government accountable to its founding ideals.
