🚨West Village Spiral: Drug Use, Violence, and Fear Grip One of NYC’s Wealthiest Neighborhoods I left the West Village a few years ago to document the migrant crisis and the rise in gang activity in Midtown. But when I came back, the neighborhood had completely fallen apart—just like a security guard warned me. I ran into him the other night while filming. He said, “I haven’t seen you in a long time. The minute you left to cover Midtown, this place went to crap again.” And the most shocking part? This is happening in one of the wealthiest neighborhoods in New York City. Million-dollar brownstones line the streets. High-end boutiques and upscale restaurants are just blocks away. But none of that wealth is stopping the decay. Luxury and lawlessness now exist side by side. Drug addicts are passed out on stoops, lighting crack pipes on porches, and shooting heroin in the open. Lighters flicker all night as people stagger around or collapse in groups. The chemical stench in the air is overwhelming. Overdose calls come in multiple times a day and night at this location. EMTs respond constantly, reviving the same people over and over—only for them to relapse again. While documenting this location, I always carry Narcan. The other night, I had to bring someone back to life—right there on the street. Residents told me they’re scared to walk outside after dark. They say things briefly improved about three years ago—but that didn’t last. The neighborhood spiraled again, fast. Police officers are present, but they look helpless. Their presence hasn’t stopped the chaos. Drug dealers linger nearby, waiting to supply addicts as soon as their high fades. All night long, you hear shouting—usually fights between addicts over drugs. Random violence is now expected. Some residents have been attacked or even killed by individuals suffering from untreated mental illness and addiction who snap without warning. This isn’t the first report I’ve put out on the West Village—and it probably won’t be the last. I’ve documented this neighborhood for years. Folks, here's another little design exercise that I spent the last few hours on 👍 This is based on a thesis I had for basically a decade now: Aiming in FPS games with the right analog stick is quite bad. Your thumb has maybe 1cm of travel on a tiny stick, fighting a spring, trying to make precise micro-adjustments AND fast 180-degree turns with the same input. If we're being honest, that's a terrible interface for the task. Your wrist, on the other hand, has roughly 180 degrees of rotational range, uses your entire forearm's muscle groups, and can make both ultra-precise micro-corrections and fast sweeping motions naturally. It's why mouse aiming destroys stick aiming: You're using your wrist and arm, not your thumb. So the thesis is simple: what if we just used wrist rotation directly as the aiming input? No VR headset, no special hardware. Just hold an old Switch1 Joy-Con in your right hand and rotate your wrist. Small rotations for precision tracking, larger rotations for fast turns. Recoil kicks the camera up and you instinctively tilt your hand back to compensate, etc. To me, it just feels right. I built a little prototype to test this. It has 4 weapons with some recoil, cover you can lean around, jump/crouch, lock-on targeting, ammo management, blablabla. The whole point is to see if this input method feels as good in practice as it does in theory. The aiming algorithm handles all the shitty stuff: Dead zones against shaky hands, auto-clutching when you unwind your wrist, asymmetric sensitivity because human wrists rotate further inward than outward, response curves for precision at low speed without sacrificing fast flicks, etc. I made a quick video to show the prototype in action. [New Xbox Controller Review] #ad Special thanks to Qrdgame_offcial for supplying me with a review unit of their Ferrox M5 Xbox & PC Controller QRD Ferrox M5 The QRD Ferrox M5 is a Wireless Xbox One–style gamepad with a transparent design. Since it targets Xbox One natively, it works automatically on PC and Xbox Series S/X. The included 2.4Ghz USB Dongle also supports Switch and Android with the right adapter (USB C), but I was not able to test those in time for this review. A Wireless Xbox Controller The QRD FERROX M5 comes in a familiar Xbox layout with Hall Effect joysticks, RGB rings around the sticks, and a magnetic & detachable clear shell that shows the internals. The controller feels very similar to a standard Xbox pad in terms of shape and size, but it’s slightly lighter at compared to the usual Xbox controller weight. The lighter weight makes it easier to hold for longer sessions without hand fatigue. The D-Pad is surprisingly good at dialing special moves feels as solid and responsive as the official Xbox controller, and that’s impressive at a lower price point. I spent a few days trying out the Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection exclusively using this controller and I did not notice any difference at all. Capabilities From what I’ve tested, the controller performs extremely well for action games, fighting games, and shooters. The Hall Effect joysticks offer smooth movement and precise control with no drift issues. The D-Pad uses micro switches, so every input is tactile and accurate. The back triggers support an adaptive “trigger stop” mode, which shortens the travel distance for faster reaction time in FPS games or quicker blocks in Fighting Games. You also get 4 back macro buttons, turbo mode, and adjustable joystick sensitivity with deadzone options. Vibration strength and RGB lighting modes are also customizable. What can it do The FERROX M5 includes an 800mAh battery that lasts around 8 hours of gameplay. It only uses the 2.4Ghz wireless connection, not Bluetooth, so it always requires the included USB Dongle. The good thing is once you sync it with your Xbox or PC, you don’t need to sync it again—it carries over between both devices automatically. The 2.4G connection is stable and low latency, and the controller has a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio and mic support. It also features a quick calibration system to keep sticks and triggers accurate over time. The overall grip and shape feel close to the official Xbox controller, comfortable for long gaming sessions, and the transparent shell gives it a distinct look. Areas of improvement I initially had trouble charging the controller while playing because connecting it to the Xbox via USB would disable all inputs, making it unusable in wired mode. But luckily QRD Support helped and provided me with an updat - I had to connect it to a PC, download the firmware tool from QRD’s website, and update the controller manually. After installing the new firmware, the controller can now charge while being used normally on Xbox, so the issue is fully resolved. The Xbox button also behaves differently on Xbox, where the single press acts like hold and the hold acts like single press; this issue doesn’t appear on PC. Syncing with the dongle took a few attempts on both Xbox and PC, but once paired, it never needed syncing again. The wireless mode is strictly 2.4G with no Bluetooth support, so it cannot connect without the dongle, though the benefit is that one pairing works across both Xbox and PC. The good thing is once you sync it with your Xbox or PC, you don’t need to sync it again—it carries over between both devices automatically. The 2.4G connection is stable and low latency, and the controller has a 3.5mm headphone jack for audio and mic support. It also features a quick calibration system to keep sticks and triggers accurate over time. The overall grip and shape feel close to the official Xbox controller, comfortable for long gaming sessions, and the transparent shell gives it a distinct look. Areas of improvement I initially had trouble charging the controller while playing because connecting it to the Xbox via USB would disable all inputs, making it unusable in wired mode. But luckily QRD Support helped and provided me with an updat - I had to connect it to a PC, download the firmware tool from QRD’s website, and update the controller manually. After installing the new firmware, the controller can now charge while being used normally on Xbox, so the issue is fully resolved. The Xbox button also behaves differently on Xbox, where the single press acts like hold and the hold acts like single press; this issue doesn’t appear on PC. Syncing with the dongle took a few attempts on both Xbox and PC, but once paired, it never needed syncing again. The wireless mode is strictly 2.4G with no Bluetooth support, so it cannot connect without the dongle, though the benefit is that one pairing works across both Xbox and PC. Still struggling to find the right words. Ifunanya, a gifted singer with Amemuso Choir, and one of the brilliant young women who acted with me in the stage adaptation of Arrow of God, is gone. Last year, I was on stage to congratulate her for her award winning performance of Pamino in the opera Magic Flute adapted by AMEMUSO Choir Gentle, talented, full of light. Her voice and presence lifted everyone around her. This is a loss that cuts deep. Her passing is also a painful reminder of a fact we often ignore: Abuja is prone to snakes. By geography, the FCT lies within the savannah belt, and rapid expansion into former bushland means snake encounters, are a real risk. We must do better. FCT Administration should ensure anti-venom is readily available in public hospitals and emergency centres across the FCT. They should Carry out regular fumigation and bush control in residential neighbourhoods, especially fast-growing estates and satellite towns. Strengthen public awareness and emergency response protocols for snakebite cases. Individuals should keep surroundings clear; control rodents; use light at night and fumigate their premises. RHP Matt Scott (Stanford Baseball) is one of the premier college arms in this year's Draft. After a solid Freshman season that was split between the bullpen and the rotation, Scott this year anchored the Stanford rotation and collected a career-high 103 strikeouts against 36 walks across 80 innings. Earned a Team USA invite for the second straight summer. Scott has an XL, workhorse frame at 6-foot-7 and 247-pounds with plenty of strength and physicality throughout. Quiet, "checkpoint-like" delivery. Small side step towards 1B side, gathers himself and breaks into the rest of his operation. Attacks from a high-three quarter slot. Low effort, does a nice job of staying connected and in-sync for someone of his stature. FB sits in the 93-96 range, but will routinely touch 97/98. Tons of carry through the zone, averaged 22.5" of IVB last year. At its best when located in the top-1/2 of the zone, which is also where it generates most of its whiffs. Just needs to stay out of the middle. Threw it 62% of the time and generated a pretty impressive miss rate of 26%, though I think it can become even more effective if he's able to hone in on his command of it. 55 pitch right now, eventual 60 if some of the low hanging fruit is cleaned up. Supplements his FB with a mid-to-upper-80s gyro SL. I actually think Scott's feel for the SL is on par, if not better, than his feel for the heater. Effective against both right and lefthanded hitters. True, hard gyro look against LHH. Will flash more two-plane tilt against RHH with some sharpness to it. Another 55 pitch that last year had a 40% miss rate. Scott needs to up the usage on his split-change. Threw it just 6% of the time last year and I think it's his best secondary pitch. Legit weapon against LHH. Averaged nearly 12 MPH off his FB and he does an excellent job of killing spin on it; averaged 866 RPMs last season. Essentially falls off a table as it approaches the plate. Serious tumbling life with a bit of arm side fade. 48% miss across a limited sample in '24, I'd give it a 60. Command and control are both average, if not a tick above. Little-to-no reliever risk. Really like the body and stuff. Projects to be one of the first few college arms off the board this July and is a potential first-rounder.
