"Like a river to the sea." A flash mob in Australia’s Brisbane city drew a large crowd as protesters gathered to oppose new Queensland laws restricting pro-Palestinian expression. Set to John Farnham’s 1988 hit “Two Strong Hearts”, the performance used the lyric “like a river to the sea” as a deliberate workaround to echo a now-banned phrase. The phrase "from the river to the sea" had been widely used by protesters over the past two years in demonstrations against Israel’s genocide in Gaza. It is now criminalised under Queensland state law, carrying potential prison penalties of up to two years, in what critics say is legislation brought under foreign influence via pro-Israeli lobby groups. The song choice turned a familiar Australian anthem into a pointed protest against political censorship. The demonstration came a day before police arrested around 20 people at a larger rally on 18 April, where protesters openly chanted and displayed phrases such as “from the river to the sea”. Those arrested were taking part in what was a peaceful protest, intentionally challenging the legislation. Queensland has an opportunity for change on 26 October. Queenslanders deserve a government with long-term vision. They deserve a government that won't keep going down the path of more crime, poor health services, failing power grids, increased red, green and black tape, poor education outcomes and arrogant politicians. As national Leader of One Nation, I know that, if Queenslanders put their faith in the 93 candidates we have running in this upcoming election, there will be a long-term plan for my home state's focus on Far North Queensland, Central and western Queensland, as much as on the south-east corner. Queensland has been lacking strong, visionary leadership for many years, but I believe we have real leadership waiting in the wings come 26 October. James Ashby has worked at my side for almost 10 years. His ability to work with community and business leaders, voters and politicians across the country is admirable. James has been instrumental in One Nation delivering so much for Queensland. I have great faith in the leadership qualities of James, who is fighting to win the Queensland set of Keppel. Queensland must get rid of Labor, after many long, frustrating years of economic mismanagement, poor governance and the cost-of-living crisis. But the LNP's support for so many of Labor's policies disturbs me; it makes it unlikely we'll see anything different on the most important issues. With the One Nation team led by James Ashby at this election, Queenslanders have a genuine alternative to the major parties. Footage of a Muslim officer being abused at a protest was widely shared this weekend. It happened a few weeks ago and we won’t be resharing the video, but yesterday we saw more of the same. Nobody should have to put up with abuse at work and that includes police officers. Arrests were made in all these incidents and we'll be pushing for charges in every case.
