what are your thoughts with the other plugin called "normality" plugin?

i've actually never tried using normality so i can't judge it much, but from the stuff i have seen it looks pretty nice and it might be even better than using normalize since you have more control

the 3d renders are .exr so i used extractor which has all the passes from the 3d render - choose the normal pass - OCIO Color Space Transform to work in the correct color space - normalize - tint effect to make it black / white but you can also use threshold or tritone

normalize is the only plugin which isn't built in after effects, it's a really old plugin but it's free everything else should be in AE yea, keylight etc. do work i did do a lumakey version as well but the version with normal map worked the best for me for 3D renders
