Joy MacPhail is out as chair of BC Ferries. That departure was overdue, but the timing raises bigger questions. In September, BC Ferries has to submit Performance Term 7 to the B.C. Ferries Commissioner. That process will help determine what happens to fares after 2028, when the current $500M provincial support runs out. The minister admitted in Estimates that BC Ferries is already working through cost pressures, fare assumptions and internal efficiencies. BC Ferries has also warned fares could rise by roughly 30% without a sustainable funding model. So was MacPhail removed because the NDP suddenly discovered accountability, or because the next fare hike was becoming impossible to defend? British Columbians deserve answers before the NDP swaps out the chair and sticks ferry users with the bill.
