Hachoo! (ハチュー！ / 破兆), released in 1989 by Jaleco, is an obscure Japanese arcade side-scrolling beat-’em-up. It is of interest to retro gaming historians for being an early example of a game that had an into-the-screen-throw. Interestingly its release predates Konami’s Turtles arcade game (with a similar mechanic) by just less than a month. The title sounds like a sneeze but is intended as a Chinese-style karate yell (similar to “hi-ya!”). The kanji 破兆 roughly conveys “broken omen,” tying into the premise. The game is set in ancient China where an evil force or demon is trying to break free from a stone statue/prison.
