The 4-meter tax rule for cars in India has severely impacted our car market, discouraging global brands from bringing their international models here as it doesn’t make business sense for them. Cars under 4 meters (28% gst) with small engines attract a 1% or 3% cess, but for longer cars, the cess goes beyond 15%, making the total tax around 43%, which is included in the ex-showroom price. If such taxes on cars under 1500cc didn’t exist, the government could facilitate the sale of better-quality cars in larger numbers.
