George R.R. Martin has written >1 million words for his “A Song of Ice & Fire” series. Every letter of the first 5 books was typed on an MS-DOS program called WordStar 4.0. The text editor was released in the mid-1980s and he saves progress on floppy disks. One big reason is that WordStar is grandfathered in: he wrote the books — which was adapted to HBO’s “Game of Thrones” — from 1991 to 2011. Another reason is focus. He uses two computers. One PC for cruising the web and doing emails. The old MS-DOS one for writing with no distractions.
