โ€œWho is the enemy, and who has ventured into whose backyard?โ€ War is rarely as simple as it may appear in online debates or social media threads. As military strategist Carl von Clausewitz once wrote, โ€œWar is not an act of senseless destruction, but a continuation of politics by other means.โ€ The reality of warfare extends beyond the initial victories or battles โ€” itโ€™s about understanding territory, strategy, and resolve. โ€œBe careful what you wish forโ€ is more than just a cautionary phrase in this context. Sun Tzu in The Art of War famously said, โ€œIf your opponent is of choleric temper, seek to irritate him.โ€ However, fighting on unfamiliar ground often leads to the disadvantage, especially when the opponent is on home turf. When engaged on oneโ€™s own soil, the defending force benefits from local knowledge, terrain advantages, and most importantly, a sense of duty to protect their homeland. As Clausewitz also emphasized, defending oneโ€™s own territory is often the key to a successful outcome. In such a scenario, no army comes out unscathed, and the notion of conflict resembling a simple Amapiano battle is far from the truth. True warfare involves sacrifices, psychological resilience, and strategic intelligence. Military history reveals that invaders often face immense challenges when they enter anotherโ€™s territory, from logistics to local resistance โ€” a hard-earned lesson from the battlefields of history. Moreover, the lack of a swift response from South Africaโ€™s President, particularly in such a tense situation, signals a deeper understanding of the stakes. A leader who remains composed and measured, especially when better informed, showcases a calculated approach to decision-making. This quiet response doesnโ€™t indicate weakness but rather a well-thought-out strategy. He knows what heโ€™s doing โ€” carefully weighing the consequences of any actions and ensuring that unnecessary conflict is avoided. Itโ€™s crucial to note that it is only an assumption that Rwanda would have no support should conflict break out. The diplomatic landscape is far more complex than it may seem at first glance. South Africa, in recent years, has pissed off several international allies, including Israel, and this has the potential to weaken their position in any international conflict. Rwanda, however, is not without friends. Its strategic alliances are far-reaching, and they are not without international support when needed. In times of crisis, sobriety in leadership is paramount. This is where level-headed decision-makers come to the forefront. Itโ€™s easy for keyboard warriors and Twitter commentators to suggest bold moves, but it is the sober minds in leadership who understand the complexity of these decisions. Leaders who take the time to analyze the situation, consider all variables, and maintain diplomacy are the ones who prevent unnecessary escalation and destruction. Wisdom in leadership is often quiet, measured, and patient.
