Ryan has such a smooth delivery. When is see today's pitchers throwing with max effort, it's no wonder they get hurt elbows. Ump missed the curve ball for strike three too.

I miss listening to Harry & Ritchie calling baseball games.

@notgaetti how can anyone say this guy was overrated, couldn’t pitch today, or was just a compiler. Fastball elite, curveball elite, and that change or two seamer was filthy too

The most underrated part of this clip is that Schmidt was 7 for 37 against Ryan at this point with FIVE homers. So he probably wasn’t getting a hit of Nolan. But if he did it was probably going to be a home run.

Terrible missed strike call on that curve Ryan through that should have run up Schmidt!

Baseball was so, so, so much better back then. From the uniforms, the announcers, to the style of play. It’s a shame it’s unwatchable now just like nearly every sport.

No strike box. No pitch count. No time clock. No pitch by pitch analysis. No in game on field interviews. When baseball was king.

@hochman What's crazy is Schmidt retired two years later. Ryan is 3 years older but retired 6 years later. I'm a Cards fan. Schmidt retired when I was an adolescent. I am biased but NL 3rd base defense my lifetime/seen live is Aranodo tied with Schmidt then Rollen. Then Chipper.

Maybe the greatest pitcher ever vs maybe the greatest third baseman ever?

What I wouldn’t do to be able to go back and listen to a Phillies broadcast with Harry and Whitey.
