Today is a big day for me, as Im part of this Pudgy Penguins family spread across all corners of our world. The 5th anniversary sounds powerful and truly magnificent! It’s a day just like any other because the rhythm of life doesn’t change, we continue build, support, evolve, and bring new members into our Huddle. BUT today is a special occasion to congratulate every huddle holder. Every community member has their own story, and that’s what makes this journey unique. We experience the ups and downs together; we are all human with real feelings and emotions, but we always support each other. This is what turned our community into a family. For this anniversary, I just had to do something special. Huge thanks to everyone who supported me and made this a reality. Rick Rubin: "Make what you love, not what you think people will like" "If you want to live in a creative way, which will benefit everything in your life, be a better person in your family, do a better job starting a new business, it's all the same. I don't really know anything about music. It's more a way of looking at the world and wanting it to be the best it could possibly be. And doing whatever it takes to be the best it could possibly be." Rubin shares how his career happened: "From the beginning, I never thought any of the things I'm doing were possible or realistic. I just did things out of the love of them, thinking I would have real jobs. That my passion would be my hobby, and I'd have a job to support my hobby. And it just magically turned out different than that without me knowing it was possible." On why some things connect and others don't: "The stars line up at certain times for certain things to happen. Sometimes you can make something great, and it doesn't connect for whatever reason. Sometimes you make two things you think are the two best things you've ever made. One of them connects with the world. One of them doesn't. And it might not have anything to do with what's in the art. It might be that it came out the same day as something else. Or there was a bigger story at the time. There's so much to it that we don't understand." He continues: "All we can do is make something good and put it out and hope for the best. That's all there is. We never know why things work. Even if you make a piece of art and it works, you may not know why." On talent versus work ethic: "There are a lot of talented people who never make it because they don't have the work ethic. It's not just talent, talent's a piece. And you could argue for some people, the work ethic trumps the talent." Rubin explains what real collaboration is: "Having worked with a lot of bands, I see there's often this friction where people are trying to get their idea in. That's not a collaboration. A real collaboration is when everyone who's there is working together towards whatever is the best thing for the whole. Whether it's your idea or someone else's idea, it doesn't matter. If you're invested in the collaboration, you want the best idea to win. You don't want your idea to win." On what makes art great: "What makes it great is the personal. With all of its imperfections. With all of its quirkiness. That's what makes it great. How you see the world that's different from how everyone else sees the world. That's why you're an artist. That's your purpose in sharing your work with the world." He warns against being derivative: "There are these derivative voices where they're finding what they think other people want to hear, and they start saying it because they've heard other people say similar things that are now successful. Even if they have some short-term success doing that, it's not revolutionary. It doesn't change the world. It doesn't last. The people who you first see and you might not like that you come to like because you don't understand them at first, those are the ones that change the world. Those are the ones you dedicate your fandom to for life." Rubin shares his philosophy on taste: "You can't second-guess your own taste for what someone else is going to like. We're not smart enough to know what someone else is going to like. To make something thinking, 'Well, I don't really like it, but I think this group of people will like it,' it's a bad way to play the game of music or art. You have to do what's personal to you. It's such an exciting time to be an artist on the internet. We now have the technology to build out our worlds, in spaces we own, it is truly the age of ideas. I've built a new home for my projects here, and in advance of my next major release with Transient Labs on June 16th, I want to share what I've made with you all, and open a dialogue about how we can use these tools as artists to enhance the experience of making and sharing our art. This is an overview of davekrugman dot com (link in thread), specifically about new sites for Drip Drop and DRIVE, and to that end, I'll give a work from each project to someone who reshares this post. If you are an artist who is curious on how to build a site for yourself, I would be happy to help, I'm an open book, ask me in the comments below. There are so many tools to use- I mostly used Claude / Anthropic- and now we can literally speak our ideas into reality , the possibilities feel truly infinite, if you have curiosity, patience, and a bit of time to explore a new frontier. For too long, artists have had to build on the rented space of social platforms, and now it feels like we can really create sovereign spaces that we own and make ours with our unique vision. This is why the BC Ostrich Farm matters. It shows clearly that the government has abandoned reason, logic, and fairness. It shows that what they say goes, no matter what they have to take from you to do it or how many years you spent creating the thing they will eagerly destroy. They don't care about proving themselves. They care about doing it and shutting you up. They'll go so far as to throw you in jail to shut you up and they'll create laws to criminalize all speech they don't like. They'll even create laws to kick you off the internet without any due process and make you sign an NDA so you can't tell anyone what happened. They fear your voice. They'll take over your property and build a ridiculous wall of hay to block the world from seeing and rightly questioning the cruelty of what they're doing. They'll make no fly zones so you can't fly a drone and see. They'll harass veterans who dare to even point out to them that they're breaking the law and then they'll bark back that they are the law and what they say goes. It doesn't matter if it's different than what they said ten minutes ago. If they say it, it's true. So shut up and be quiet. They'll fund radical groups to target people they don't like and they'll use circular reporting from the groups they fund to weakly prop up their atrocious disregard for our rights and freedoms. And they'll look you in the face the whole time and tell you that it's for your own good. It's for all of our good. It's for our good that your life's work is destroyed. It's for our good that your speech is silenced. It's for our good that you're thrown in jail to silence you while repeat criminals walk in and out of the court house without even spending a week in jail. It's certainly for their good. Not for our country's. Not for yours. That's why the ostrich farm matters. It shows all of this so clearly in a way that any amount of words never could. And the world needs to see it.

I was quoted $40,000 to replace my roof. It was only nine years old. Like, how is that possible? How are we thousands of years into this whole shelter thing and we still don't have anything better than asphalt shingles that crumble the second they get hit with hail like here in Texas? And I'm not the only one thinking about this because every time there's a hailstorm, entire neighborhoods get re-roofed. Insurance companies pay out billions. Insurance costs are through the roof. Homeowners are dealing with the chaos. And then we just put the same stupid, fragile shingles back on and wait for it to happen all over again. There has to be a better way. How do we have phones that can survive being dropped from buildings and cars that take impacts at high speed? We've got freaking rocket boosters landing themselves in the middle of the ocean But we can't make a roof that handles a little ice for falling from the sky. It just doesn't make sense. And when you see something like this, something that's clearly more durable, more advanced, something that actually solves the problem, you realize we've just been accepting mediocrity for way too long. It's not asphalt. It's engineered to last for decades. It's designed to take in impact. It looks better. It performs better. And it should have been the standard years ago. What frustrates me is that innovation in roofing has been so slow because nobody wants to be the first to try something new. Contractors just stick with what they know. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Homeowners go with what's cheap upfront, even if it costs more long term. And meanwhile, we're all just replacing roofs every decade like it's normal. Luna: "In the specific incident of Eglin Air Force Base, which is where we had the pilot testimony and we were able to see some images, these things were frying the equipment on the aircraft. Some of our most state-of-the-art technology is getting completely fried." Douthat: "And this is something that pilots told you had happened to them? Luna: "Yes, yep. Now, the other issue is, sometimes pilots won't report because they don't want to be taken off flight status. So there's removing the stigma of if you're supposed to have safe flying. You want to also track national security issues. You have to be able to document this stuff. But when you have this type of stuff impacting military training, impacting flight operations, impacting our technology, it's a problem. "We should follow up, and then say, 'Okay, well, is this technology that, potentially, could be advanced tech from adversary nations? Two summers ago, Kara Lawson was speaking to her Duke basketball team. She wanted them to shift their mindset. What followed was 2+ minutes of gold on how to be successful. Here’s Lawson on embracing hard things: “We all wait in life for things to get easier. Think in your own life. I just gotta get through this, and then it'll be easy … It's what we do. We wait for stuff to get easier. “It will never get easier. What happens is you handle hard better. “Most people think life is gonna get easier. Basketball is gonna get easier. School is gonna get easier. It never gets easier. What happens is you become someone that handles hard stuff better. “That's a mental shift that has to occur and each of your brains. If you go around waiting for stuff to get easier in life, it's never going to happen. And then what happens? Oh, it's so hard. Oh, I can't do it. When is it going to be easy for me? Oh, it's easy for other people. “It's not. It's hard. And the second we see you handling hard better, what are we gonna do? We're gonna make it harder. Because we're preparing you for when you leave here. Not just basketball – in life. “And if you think life when you leave college is going to all of a sudden get easy because you graduated and you got a degree, it's not going to get easier. It's going to get harder. “Make yourself a person that handles hard well, not someone that's waiting for the easy. Because if you have a meaningful pursuit in life, it will never be easy. If you're trying to win a championship, if you're trying to have a family … Ask your parents. Do you think it was ever easy for them? “If you want to be successful, it goes to the people that handle hard well. Those are the people that get the stuff they want … If it's hard, don't get discouraged. It's supposed to be. Don't wait for it to be [easy]. It won't. It’s about building a business, building a family, building a community, being a valuable citizen and every other meaningful thing in life. 2. “Hard” doesn’t mean “bad.” There can be joy in hard things. 3. There’s a Haitian proverb: “Behind mountains are more mountains.” There’s always another one to climb. 4. What you see on social media is a facade. People make their lives look glamorous online. Behind the screen is a human being struggling through their journey. 5. None of us are immune to difficulty (even if some try to appear that way). 6. “Easy” is convenient, “hard” is fulfilling. What satisfies you in the short-term robs you in the long run. 7. Have you ever heard someone tell a story about how easy a great achievement was? 8. “Easy choices hard life, hard choices easy life” misses the point. We shouldn’t seek an easy life to begin with. 9. Every gifted one who has ever held on to ancient values of truth has either been demonized or vilified. By exactly those who CLAIM to know the truth and be the only truth. Some are drowned in the crowd. Some flee from the crowd. Some distance themselves completely from the crowd. Depending on how they are able to hold on to what they have found... Look around. Rick Rubin: "I've met very few billionaires who are happy" "I don't look at the outside very much. I look inward. I try to focus on what do I feel, what am I seeing, in the hopes that by sharing what's going on in me, it resonates with someone else. I can't predict what someone else would like. And I don't think anybody can. So if I'm authentically true to myself, that's the best chance of someone else liking something." Rubin explains the paradox of acceptance: "People want to be accepted. And I'm suggesting that the best way to be accepted is to be yourself. It's not to change yourself to what someone else thinks. First of all, you don't really know what someone else thinks. And if you're not genuine to yourself, nothing is there. It's just a projection or a mask. It's not true." On what makes something interesting: "In a sea of information, the more yours is personal, the more it's not like hers or his or theirs, the more it's yours. If we're all thinking the same thing, it's boring. Why would we make anything if everyone thinks the same thing? What makes us interesting are the differences. Even the imperfections. The imperfections are what make us human." Rubin shares what captures his attention: "There's so much middle of the road, and it doesn't interest me. I want it because it's louder, quieter, softer, harder. It's pushing some boundary. That's why I take notice. It's not more of the same. It's the one that makes you stop and think: did I really hear that? Did I really see that? What's going on here?" On what success actually means: "If I like it, that doesn't mean anything. That's what people think. Just because I like it doesn't give it any value. But as an artist, if you like it, that's all of the value. That's the success. It comes when you say, 'I like this enough for other people to see it.' Not 'other people like it, so it's successful.' That doesn't mean anything. Because other people liking it is out of your control. All that's in your control is making the thing to the best of your ability." Rubin reframes what greatness means: "I came to realize recently, it's all an offering to God. And if you're making an offering to God, you're not thinking about the budget, or hoping this segment of the audience is going to like it. We don't think like that. It's a higher vibration. We're making the best we can make, to the best of our ability, out of love and devotion. That's what it is. There is no higher form." On criticism and reviews: "Most of the artists I work with don't read any criticism or reviews, good or bad. The ones who are the strongest in who they are can even read a terrible review and laugh at it. Because when someone gives you criticism, it's telling you as much about who they are as what you've made." Rubin explains the only real competition: "The idea of the Oscars or the Grammys, where we're saying which album is better than another, it doesn't make any sense to me. Because it's always apples and oranges. The only people we can honestly compete with is ourselves. Is this the best I can make today? Have I gone further than I've gone before? That's all we can do. That's the only competition that makes sense." On the obsession required for mastery: "Many of the artists that are great at what they do are great for one reason: they fall in love with this thing, and they just want to know everything they could possibly learn about it. I'm working on a documentary project with comedians now. One of the things they talk about is their commitment; when other people are going out on the weekend, they're going to perform every night they possibly can. For a period of 10 years. Having bad performances. Having people not like what they do. Banging their head against the wall. But that obsession with breaking through, and when I say breaking through, I don't mean to the audience. I mean with themselves." Rubin shares a hard truth about dreams and jobs: "Maybe your purpose in life isn't related to your job. Maybe your job is your job, and the job is the thing that supports you. And then the rest of your waking hours are devoted to your purpose. Don't let following your dreams undermine your ability to support yourself. If you decide 'I want to be a comedian and I'm putting all my eggs in the comedian basket', the pressure of having to support yourself will change you as a comedian. Not for the better. You want the stability of being able to take care of yourself in the world to be free to do whatever your passion is." He challenges the mythology of genius: "There's a mythology that the people who make things that we love are special people, the people on Mount Olympus, magic people who are geniuses. And then there's the rest of us. That's not the case. We're all just people. We're all doing our best. We're all good at some things, not good at other things. We're humans. And sometimes we find a way to make something beautiful." Rubin shares his most vulnerable moment: "The call came: 'How do you feel? You have the number one album in the country.' And I remember saying, 'I've never been more unhappy in my life.' We mistakenly think some kind of outward success is going to change something in us. And it does not. It may make life more comfortable. But it doesn't change who we are. Any hole in ourselves that we're hoping to fill does not get filled." He explains why successful people are often unhappy: "If you spend 20 years of your life working towards a goal that's going to solve everything, and then you finally achieve what you've been trying to do for 20 years, and nothing changes, that's when you get hopeless. It's not uncommon to see very successful artists who are very unhappy. I'm sure you've met many very successful business people. Billionaires. Very few of them are happy. Very few. They've accomplished their dreams and are unhappy. Because we don't know what we want. We're trying to fill something that maybe can't be filled through material or public success. It's something else. Some internal thing." Rubin closes with this: "Don't do things just because you think you're going to get something for it. That's not why we do things. Do what's interesting to you. Follow what's interesting. Don't worry about the outcome. We can never predict the outcome. Follow your own inner guide. It might not make sense to anyone else. It might not even make sense to us. And that's okay. The wisest thing we can do is know enough to know we don't know. Anytime you think 'I know how it is' your world just got a lot smaller."

Rick Rubin: "I've met very few billionaires who are happy" "I don't look at the outside very much. I look inward. I try to focus on what do I feel, what am I seeing, in the hopes that by sharing what's going on in me, it resonates with someone else. I can't predict what someone else would like. And I don't think anybody can. So if I'm authentically true to myself, that's the best chance of someone else liking something." Rubin explains the paradox of acceptance: "People want to be accepted. And I'm suggesting that the best way to be accepted is to be yourself. It's not to change yourself to what someone else thinks. First of all, you don't really know what someone else thinks. And if you're not genuine to yourself, nothing is there. It's just a projection or a mask. It's not true." On what makes something interesting: "In a sea of information, the more yours is personal, the more it's not like hers or his or theirs, the more it's yours. If we're all thinking the same thing, it's boring. Why would we make anything if everyone thinks the same thing? What makes us interesting are the differences. Even the imperfections. The imperfections are what make us human." Rubin shares what captures his attention: "There's so much middle of the road, and it doesn't interest me. I want it because it's louder, quieter, softer, harder. It's pushing some boundary. That's why I take notice. It's not more of the same. It's the one that makes you stop and think: did I really hear that? Did I really see that? What's going on here?" On what success actually means: "If I like it, that doesn't mean anything. That's what people think. Just because I like it doesn't give it any value. But as an artist, if you like it, that's all of the value. That's the success. It comes when you say, 'I like this enough for other people to see it.' Not 'other people like it, so it's successful.' That doesn't mean anything. Because other people liking it is out of your control. All that's in your control is making the thing to the best of your ability." Rubin reframes what greatness means: "I came to realize recently, it's all an offering to God. And if you're making an offering to God, you're not thinking about the budget, or hoping this segment of the audience is going to like it. We don't think like that. It's a higher vibration. We're making the best we can make, to the best of our ability, out of love and devotion. That's what it is. There is no higher form." On criticism and reviews: "Most of the artists I work with don't read any criticism or reviews, good or bad. The ones who are the strongest in who they are can even read a terrible review and laugh at it. Because when someone gives you criticism, it's telling you as much about who they are as what you've made." Rubin explains the only real competition: "The idea of the Oscars or the Grammys, where we're saying which album is better than another, it doesn't make any sense to me. Because it's always apples and oranges. The only people we can honestly compete with is ourselves. Is this the best I can make today? Have I gone further than I've gone before? That's all we can do. That's the only competition that makes sense." On the obsession required for mastery: "Many of the artists that are great at what they do are great for one reason: they fall in love with this thing, and they just want to know everything they could possibly learn about it. I'm working on a documentary project with comedians now. One of the things they talk about is their commitment; when other people are going out on the weekend, they're going to perform every night they possibly can. For a period of 10 years. Having bad performances. Having people not like what they do. Banging their head against the wall. But that obsession with breaking through, and when I say breaking through, I don't mean to the audience. I mean with themselves." Rubin shares a hard truth about dreams and jobs: "Maybe your purpose in life isn't related to your job. Maybe your job is your job, and the job is the thing that supports you. And then the rest of your waking hours are devoted to your purpose. Don't let following your dreams undermine your ability to support yourself. If you decide 'I want to be a comedian and I'm putting all my eggs in the comedian basket', the pressure of having to support yourself will change you as a comedian. Not for the better. You want the stability of being able to take care of yourself in the world to be free to do whatever your passion is." He challenges the mythology of genius: "There's a mythology that the people who make things that we love are special people, the people on Mount Olympus, magic people who are geniuses. And then there's the rest of us. That's not the case. We're all just people. We're all doing our best. We're all good at some things, not good at other things. We're humans. And sometimes we find a way to make something beautiful." Rubin shares his most vulnerable moment: "The call came: 'How do you feel? You have the number one album in the country.' And I remember saying, 'I've never been more unhappy in my life.' We mistakenly think some kind of outward success is going to change something in us. And it does not. It may make life more comfortable. But it doesn't change who we are. Any hole in ourselves that we're hoping to fill does not get filled." He explains why successful people are often unhappy: "If you spend 20 years of your life working towards a goal that's going to solve everything, and then you finally achieve what you've been trying to do for 20 years, and nothing changes, that's when you get hopeless. It's not uncommon to see very successful artists who are very unhappy. I'm sure you've met many very successful business people. Billionaires. Very few of them are happy. Very few. They've accomplished their dreams and are unhappy. Because we don't know what we want. We're trying to fill something that maybe can't be filled through material or public success. It's something else. Some internal thing." Rubin closes with this: "Don't do things just because you think you're going to get something for it. That's not why we do things.
