'Rated PG' meant something different in 1973

I'll be straight-up, this is one of a handful of films I just do not have the stomach for. And it's a testament to all involved that it's not because of gore but the sheer psychic damage of the premise lol.

I'm okay with it, to me it's just a silly exploitation film as far as I see it, with a fun cast of characters.... but I can understand totally where you're coming from.

To explain the apprehension: I'd have totally knocked this one back in high school, but over the past few years I've been on a kick of writing surrogate children in my sci-fi prose. Lots of found family situations with an offbeat twist (recently, I did two space westerns with sentient cars as surrogate kids). Because I've been dealing in a lot of "mentally they're a child" characters, the idea of doing...all of THAT to a character who is effectively a child wigs me the fuck out. I'm not normally skittish about films, but this particular scenario rubs me the wrong way, even in its absurdity. It's a credit to David Manzy that even in the clips I've seen I feel so fucking bad for him. Dude is acting his ass off.

Have you heard of this scene from The Exorcist? I've seen The Baby on turner classic movies but this scene is even more gruesome!

Yet it was the lady reaching through bugs to pull a lever in Temple of Doom that brought about the PG-13 era.

And I thought *I* had women issues.

That movie is insane. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

There was no PG-13. If you weren't PG, you were X (later R). Jaws was PG. Temple of Doom and Gremlins finally made the MPAA add a rating between the two (also, Spielberg lobbied for it).

Never saw this movie nor know the title. I did know a family that had two of these cattle prods used them on the kids. We'd go over and play with them. They didn't make the cool zapping noise, but they did hurt. Didn't seem like such a big deal back then. Better than the belt.

This and Toys Are Not For Children make quite the double feature.
