Once common in early Europe and the U.S., it’s still used today in parts of northeast India and beyond. Cheap coal comes at a deadly cost: toxic air, cave-ins, child labor. The method is old. The danger is timeless.

Coal mining in India began nearly 252 years ago, around 1774, with the first coal mine at Raniganj in West Bengal. In 2024, nearly ₹8,500 crores was allocated to boost Coal Gasification projects, and several projects are already underway. Now, the Union Cabinet has approved another Coal Gasification Scheme worth ₹37,500 crores. Coal Gasification will help India produce ethanol, methanol, diesel, petroleum products, and fertiliser inputs like syngas domestically, reducing import dependence and strengthening energy security. The search for the body of Mohamed Yusuf, a gold mine worker from the Jarar region of Somali State who fell into a well in Milxo, is ongoing. Many of the workers employed in Milxo and throughout the mines of Sanaag region are Ogaden. Working in dangerous conditions, often without proper mining equipment or adequate safety measures.
