Elon Musk: Well, I’m not sure AI is the main risk I’m worried about. The vast majority of intelligence in the future will be AI. Humans will be a very tiny percentage of all intelligence if current trends continue. My focus is ensuring human intelligence and consciousness are propagated into the future. We want to maximize the probable light cone of consciousness and intelligence. Yeah, I’m very pro-human, so I want to make sure we take actions that ensure humans are along for the ride. But I think maybe in 5 or 6 years, AI will exceed the sum of all human intelligence. If that continues, human intelligence could be less than one percent of all intelligence. That’s why it’s critical we align AI with values that propagate consciousness. In the long run, it’s difficult to imagine that humans will be in charge if we’re only one percent of combined intelligence. What we can do is ensure AI has values that increase intelligence and consciousness in the universe. XAI’s mission is to understand the universe because curiosity, existence, and understanding are all connected. If you want to understand the universe, you care about propagating intelligence—and that includes humanity. Understanding the universe actually means ensuring humans continue to expand into the future. Increasing the scope, scale, and lifespan of intelligence is the ultimate goal. We carefully curate the data such that we never mention anything about consciousness...we would only give the AI controlled data about surface-level experiences and mundane objects. At some point, we would tell AI about the concept of consciousness. If the AI agrees and says it's been experiencing the same thing or recognizes the experience, then it would be convincing. Do you think AI can be conscious? If, so what is a good test for it? Is something like John Searle's Chinese Room argument sufficient?

In his view, no current AI is conscious, nor would computation based AI be. How does this relate to his panpsychist worldview of consciousness? There are different takes on panpsychism within the community. His own view is that it's not clear how micro-conscious particles actually create a unified conscious system. - We need collaboration between scientists and philosophers on consciousness research. I see a lot of people concerned that no matter what happens, the Left will not believe it. This is partially correct. There will be millions who refuse to accept anything. Approximately 4-6% will be lost forever. But we don’t need ALL of them to accept it, we just need to reach “critical mass”. We just need a certain percentage of the population to accept reality, in order to safely move onto the justice phase. The “hive mind” or “collective consciousness” is real. The “100th Monkey Effect” is real. I’m not sure exactly what percentage of people we need to wake up in order to reach critical mass, but the number exists, and we get closer to it every day. Eventually, we will reach critical mass, and humans around the globe will subconsciously accept the truth, so don’t stop waking people up, because the next person that wakes up, could be the “100th Monkey” that tips the scales of collective human consciousness.
