The bet is that the space economy will split between companies that own the full stack and companies forced to rent launch, buy components and lease the spectrum they run on. This deal is Rocket Lab making sure it stays in the first category by being able to design, build, launch, refresh and operate its own space infrastructure.

Artemis was a great test of going around the moon. However the Artemis rocket system has the same problem as the Apollo missions to the moon. It costs too much. The Artemis rocket, SLS, was designed by the US Senate. $4 billion per launch. And can only launch once each 2 years. We can’t build a moon base with this system. SLS was a rocket designed by politicians to create jobs for the old Space Shuttle contractors. They spent 15 years and $25 billion developing it, and it will never be cost effective at $4 billion per launch. It is an obsolete rocket already. It works, but it will eventually die due to budget cuts.

Built by Northrop Grumman, the massive boosters will help power the Space Launch System rocket, generating 7.2 million pounds of thrust at liftoff as NASA works toward returning astronauts to the moon. The newly shipped segments will join others already delivered to Florida and will be among the first pieces assembled for the mission.
