Air traffic control issued two warnings to the Black Hawk helicopter about the American Airlines plane. The first warning came at least a full two minutes before the crash. Aviation experts argue this gave the crew more than enough time to avoid the collision. Investigators have also recovered the black box recorders from both aircraft, containing all critical flight data.

Southwest Airlines has confirmed that one of its flights was forced to take evasive action to avoid colliding with another flight at Nashville International Airport over the weekend. Southwest reports that while approaching BNA amid gusty wind conditions, pilots of Southwest Flight 507 executed a precautionary go-around. During that action, the pilots used instructions from air traffic control and an onboard traffic alert to avoid conflicting with Southwest Flight 1152, which was departing from another runway. Flight 507 was able to land after the go-around and Flight 1152 continued to its destination in Knoxville. “We are engaged with the FAA as part of the investigation. Southwest appreciates the professionalism of its Pilots and Flight Crews in responding to the event. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the Safety of our Customers and Employees,” the airline said in a statement. Video: Flightradar24

The 14 second ATC communication audio clip shows the nature of urgency, seconds before the collision between Air Canada/ Jazz Aviation CRJ-900 jet (C-GNJZ) and the Port Authority fire truck on Runway 4/22 at LaGuardia Airport. The Truck had been cleared to cross Runway 4 at Taxiway Delta but was instructed to stop by air traffic control shortly before the collision. The NTSB (National Transportation Safety Board) has now established an on-site investigation team.
