How pythons swallow large animals. Three main factors help them. 1. They have flexible jaw structure. Unlike mammals, their upper jaw and lower jaws aren't fused. They're two separate halves connected by elastic ligaments and muscles. 2. Snakes have very stretchy skins and muscles 3. Time. After killing its prey, a python carefully repositions the deceased animal's head to swallow it head-first, ensuring the limbs fold backward against the body for smoother swallowing and preventing them from splaying out. Swallowing involves a slow, rhythmic jaw-walking motion rather than a quick gulp. The python hooks its teeth into the prey and alternates advancing the left and right jaw sides, effectively "walking" its mouth over the deer while powerful neck muscles pull it inward inch by inch. For a large deer, this energy-intensive process can take 30 minutes to several hours.
