The politicisation of the protests in the name of students is now complete. After days of violence, vandalism and orchestrated disruption, the Opposition has abandoned any pretence that this was about students. Instead of debating the issue in Parliament, they have chosen street politics and are now busy fighting among themselves over who deserves credit. It has descended into: ॰ AAP vs Congress ॰ Congress vs SP ॰ Sonam vs Congress ॰ Sonam vs Dipke and Saurav Das ॰ Dhaiya vs Dipke The only losers in this political slugfest are genuine students, whose concerns have been hijacked for partisan ends. Sonam Wangchuk’s wife castigating Rahul Gandhi only shows that she has picked a side, the side sponsoring the politics of the street veto. Tragic. We witnessed similar scenes unfold in Ladakh last year. The Wangchuks’ chequered record is once again on display. It is our collective responsibility to stand up for students and protect their interests. They must not be reduced to cannon fodder in the Opposition’s cynical political games. Genuine students deserve solutions, not sponsored chaos; dialogue, not violence; and accountability, not political one-upmanship.
