Got my own #Rem Shiny Happy People & Micheal Stipe story - my mom was in town(nyc) visiting so I took her to the museum of radio and tv 📺 as they were having a Muppet anniversary screening. There was a “Shiny Happy Monsters” 👺 song in it, feat. Actual REM and those 7ft tall lumbering Muppet Monsters that crash thru sets etc. Otherwise a true / accurate rendition- just w/ the word Monsters replacing People. After the event we are taking the elevator & I notice an incognito Micheal Stipe is in the car with us. He Looked more like a maintenance guy than superstar. My mom, taking no notice of him declares in her joyous more mid America way- “I REALLY like that shiny happy monster song. I mean it was a really GREAT song”. Micheal & I exchanged a glance and a smirk. And he slowly forms a rare smile, and the doors open we go out separate ways. Afterwards I tell her, “Mom, the guy who wrote & sang the song was in the e elevator with us.” She says, “oh you should have told me. I would have told him I think he is VERY talented”. Maybe she thought her compliment would inspire him to go beyond the muppet show. Well, I do feel she made his day and was probably some of the most honest feedback he ever got in a world of people blowin’ smoke.
