Take a collection of announcements, targets, promises and half-finished projects. Throw in some carefully selected footage. Pump up the music. Slap “Hope Again” across the screen. And apparently we’re all supposed to forget what’s happening outside the camera frame. We haven’t. People aren’t stupid. They know the difference between delivering something and announcing something. They know the difference between progress and propaganda. And they’re increasingly sick of being lectured, managed and told what narrative they’re supposed to believe. Because this isn’t just about a government trying to sell itself anymore. It’s about growing concerns over overreaching laws, expanding state power and politicians deciding that more and more areas of ordinary life are theirs to regulate, control or interfere with. Then there’s the online propaganda machine. People are increasingly questioning whether algorithmic systems are simply showing them what they want to see — or whether political narratives are being amplified, suppressed and pushed according to decisions made by platforms, institutions and political interests. You can manipulate a feed. You can manipulate a headline. You can manipulate a campaign video. You cannot manipulate people’s fucking electricity bills. You cannot algorithm away the housing crisis. You cannot edit poverty out of existence. You cannot CGI functioning public services. And you cannot keep dressing up failure, delay and broken promises as historic achievement and expect everyone to clap. Britain doesn’t need another carefully manufactured political fantasy. It needs honesty. It needs accountability. It needs results. And above all, it needs politicians to stop treating the public like gullible fucking idiots who will believe whatever narrative is pushed hard enough. So keep your glossy montages. Keep your slogans. Keep your choreographed talking points. Keep telling yourselves “Hope Again.” Because for millions of people, the reality isn’t hope. It’s higher costs, higher taxes, failing services, endless problems and a government increasingly convinced that if it controls the message, nobody will notice the mess. We notice. And no amount of political spin is going to change that.
