This farmer just said the quiet part out loud. “I was nothing more than a serf on the land.” “A chemically-addicted farmer beholden to all these large ag conglomerates.” “Monsanto.” “Big seed companies.” But Kevin Fulton escaped. He transitioned his Nebraska farm to an organic, regenerative operation in 2002. “I can’t tell you how good that feels to not have all those gorillas on your back.” Now, he’s warning that pesticide companies are threatening to put countless farmers at risk with their push for a federal liability shield from lawsuits over harms caused by pesticides. “We have to be able to… stand up against them and have some type of recourse if there’s damages.” The stakes could not be higher as Congress debates the 2026 Farm Bill. The House voted to strip the pesticide liability shield out, but it’s still unclear if the Senate will vote to put it back in. And on top of that, Congress must decide if this Farm Bill will provide vital support for farmers to transition from conventional pesticide and chemical farming to regenerative practices. Regenerative farming protects human health, restores soil health, and empowers farmers to keep their profits out of the hands of Big Ag corporations that treat them like serfs on their own land. This Farm Bill is a pivotal moment for independent farmers. Read our new blog below to find out how Congress can empower farmers and how you can make your voice heard:🧵

The Vanishing Acre - A Fight to Preserve The American Farmer Sam Shoemate Podcast Ep. 8 Sam and Jon (Jon🇺🇸🌲) delve into the realities of small-scale farming in America, particularly focusing on the challenges faced by farmers who cannot rely solely on agriculture for their livelihood. Jon shares his journey from military service to becoming a farmer, highlighting the importance of regenerative agriculture practices that enhance land health while raising livestock. The discussion touches on the financial struggles of small farmers, including the high costs of land and infrastructure, and the difficulties in accessing processing facilities for their products. Jon emphasizes the need for community support and local purchasing to sustain small farms, while also addressing the concerning trend of foreign ownership of American farmland and its implications for food security. Takeaways "Regenerative means you're utilizing the animals in the way that they were designed to best improve your land." "Only about 6% of US farms actually do direct to consumer sales." "If you buy from a local farmer, roughly 75 cents on the dollar stays in your local area." "Invest in your health by buying better quality food from local sources." The Circle of Life…or if I wanted to be more controversial: ‘MEAT; it’s in your bread’. Today we are spreading CalPhos - a fertiliser product with phosphate and calcium, as our soils are very low phosphate. It’s a great, organic fertiliser. And it’s derived from meat processing. In butchers and meat processors, anything that can’t be used, sold, or exported (like chicken feet!) has to be incinerated. The resulting grey dust is ‘CalPhos’ which will support our arable crops for the next 2-3 years. We spread it ahead of our milling wheats which will be sown in the autumn as they have a high demand. Nature is a carbon cycle of life, death, and seasons of thriving and just surviving. As a ‘largely’ arable farmer I rely on other sectors in a big way. • if my wheat doesn’t make human consumption grade it can go for chicken or pig feed rather than being wasted. • I could sell wheat to produce biofuels (although the remaining bioethanol plant has just closed with just as big an impact as the steel furnace except UK Prime Minister didn’t want to save that one (massively affecting wheat prices and farm profitability here in the UK). • I exchange straw with neighbouring beef farmers for the manure that comes from their cattle yards providing the best natural fertiliser you can get. • when the price of wheat is poor, I can grow other crops such as barley, beans, rapeseed, oats, or grass to keep the farm profitable So you see how we need each other in farming? We are one sector, one industry, and we also steward 71% of the UK’s land area! So, ‘meat…it’s in your bread*!’ #plantnutrients #farming #ukgrowers #sustainable #tractor #fertiliser #nutrients #plantfood #regenerative #regenag #regen *#vegan disclaimer - this post is not meant to antagonise vegans or vegetarians; it’s an educational post about sustainable UK regenerative farming.

Autonomous farming at Reservoir Farms in Salinas. When I got here joined a bunch of farmers from Florida who were visiting. But during the talks Bonsai Robotics caught my attention. One of the first to use world models to drive autonomous farm equipment. Here's their CEO, Tyler Niday, talking to me about what's going on in farming around the world. And of course we talk about world models. My favorite topic lately. They have robots farming in Australia and here in America in a variety of places. He ran autonomous tractors for John Deere USA for years. Reservoir Farms is an incubator—think of it like Y Combinator or Founders Inc., but for people who are making autonomous, AI-driven tractors and other farm equipment. It's a remarkable place. Worth telling anyone in farming about. Danny Bernstein 🍇🥬, who runs it, used to work at Google in high tech and got the bug to help startups hit the farming market. He has a fairly big plot of land to do all sorts of testing, demos, and development work here in Salinas, with about 40 acres of a variety of different crops. That is something you can't do in Silicon Valley anymore. It takes me back to my childhood when Silicon Valley used to be all farms. It was a lot of fun hanging out with the farmers. They'll be doing some events and hackathons down here. If you're from Silicon Valley, it's only an hour south, and I highly recommend coming down to see what's going on. The AI part of farming is very similar to building an autonomous car or truck, so the kinds of jobs are very similar. The market is just very different, and the kinds of things a robot needs to figure out are different. You might be picking apples or spraying crops. You don't have pedestrian traffic, maybe, but you have other kinds of things you need to train and model on to work around. Anyways, I had a beautiful day hanging out here.

Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins: $700M for Regenerative Agriculture “Today is about the next step in making America healthy again… and that is talking about regenerative agriculture.” “Regenerative agriculture is a conservation management approach that emphasizes natural resources through improved soil health, water management, and natural vitality for the productivity and prosperity of American agriculture and all of our communities.” “Today we are launching a new farmer first regenerative agriculture pilot program, which will invest $700 million specifically to support regenerative agriculture.” “Protecting and improving the health of our soil is critical not only for the future viability of farmland, but to the future success of American farmers. In order to continue to be the most productive and most efficient growers in the world, we must protect our top soil, from unnecessary erosion and boost the microbiome of the soil.” “Today's announcement encourages these priorities while supporting farmers to transition to regenerative agriculture if they so choose. This is a farmer's first pilot program and the first of its kind.” “This initiative puts American farmers first as part of the solution to make America healthy again, and by supporting and by supporting access to American grown whole foods that are critical to addressing the chronic disease crisis nationwide.” “This new pilot is about results that last. It will make our farms more productive, our land healthier, and our water cleaner.”
