🇧🇲At a reception held at Government House, His Majesty The King reflected on his visit to Bermuda following a day of engagements across the island. From St. George’s to Dockyard, His Majesty described Bermuda as “a most cherished and important member of the British family,” noting that it meant a great deal to make Bermuda his first Overseas Territory visit as King. He thanked the people of Bermuda for their warm welcome, recognising both those who have shaped the island’s history and those continuing to build its future.

There are multiple factors at play that will influence where Erin goes. One is over western Canada! The main uncertainty is the shape, and strength, of the Bermuda High — a large high pressure system sprawled from the Azores to near Bermuda. It dominates the Atlantic, and acts as a force field of sorts that blocks hurricanes. It’s what’s suppressing Erin south right now. In the coming days, Erin will probably arc around the western side of the Bermuda high as it curves north. That’s why the shape and strength of the Bermuda High are so important. A stronger/farther west Bermuda High would potentially shunt Erin west-southwest, bringing it closer to the Bahamas and perhaps southeastern U.S. A weaker Bermuda High would allow Erin an out-to-sea “escape route” earlier, sparing most of North America any impacts. Either way, Bermuda and the Canadian Maritimes are at the greatest risk of impacts. The shape of the Bermuda High will be influenced by two “upper-level lows,” or pockets of cold air, low pressure and spin at high altitudes. Those two disturbances will roll across North America and work to erode the western side of the Bermuda High. One will arrive Friday, and the other on Tuesday. The latter is currently located over Yukon, Canada. Because it had previously been over the Gulf of Alaska, meteorologists didn’t have the ability to release weather balloons into it. Now that it’s moving over land, more weather balloons will “sample” its structure. That data will be pumped into weather models, helping to improve simulations. Subsequently, we’ll have a much better idea of how the upper-air weather pattern over North America — and the shape of the Bermuda High and eventual track of Erin — by probably Wednesday afternoon.

Fantastic to see some of the sporting opportunities on offer for young people living in Bermuda, including… ⛵ The Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, where His Majesty met young sailors and saw them in action on the water! 🪘 The National Gombey Dance Troupe, who showcased a traditional performance at the Royal Naval Dockyard. 🏅 Bermudian medallists from the Commonwealth and Olympic Games, as well as members of Team Bermuda, who are due to compete at this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. 🧭 The Duke of Edinburgh International Award, of which Bermuda has one of the highest participation rates in the world.

This evening, Kristin and I were honoured to welcome His Majesty King Charles III to Bermuda on behalf of the Government and people of Bermuda. His Majesty’s visit is the first visit by a reigning Sovereign to a British Overseas Territory since Queen Elizabeth II visited Bermuda in 2009. During his time here, The King will meet Bermudians across the island and experience our culture, history, natural environment, and the traditions that continue to shape our community. This Royal Visit reflects the longstanding relationship between Bermuda and the United Kingdom, while providing an opportunity to showcase the warmth of our people, the beauty of our island, and the very best of who we are.
