Related, if you haven't seen a monotype casting machine you're missing out. These things were like the ASML EUV of their day. Just outrageously cool machines. Entirely mechanical, but programmed and running from punch tape!

Sometimes people forget that before Charles Babbage and his mechanical computer of 1830 there were programmable looms, and this is an advancement on that on a different branch. God bless mechanical/analog computation.

I remember watching a linotype in operation. A lot bigger and a lot more elaborate, faster, producing justified newspaper columns. Amazing what tech we've developed over time for the written word!

These machines are still more impressive to me than the assortment of crappy automatons being promoted by China as some sort of advanced technology at the moment.
