Even though he was a fictional character, he was inspired in the real life Daniel “Chappy” James, who in 1975, made history as the first African American four-star general in the United States Armed Forces. An highly-decorated fighter pilot, he trained pilots in WWII, and flew combat missions in both Korean & Vietnam wars.
