If I were an atheist, I would honestly think twice before holding on to that belief. Religion gives life meaning and purpose, and it also comes with accountability for our choices. Atheism, on the other hand, offers no ultimate meaning. If we die, that is simply the end, no continuation, no justice beyond this life. So from a rational point of view, if I followed a religion and later found out it was false, I would lose nothing. But if I lived as an atheist and then discovered that religion was true, the loss would be irreversible. If you are going to gamble with something as serious as existence and the afterlife, at least gamble using good data and sound reasoning.
