I think there is some truth in that it was retaliatory reasoning. What Hitler did was horrific, but what was happening to Germany between WWI, and WWII, was also horrific and also kept mysteriously quiet in history books.

I remember that most of us have an incredibly warped view of WW2 because of spun up narrative and no real clue what to believe.
