Tie Fighter (LucasArts, 1994) is the sequel to X-Wing which was released the year before. This time you join the Dark Side and blast away at rebel scum! The prequel was great, Tie Fighter was even better. The iconic sound effects of the laser get me everytime. Joining the imperial forces gives it a whole new vibe. Epic cutscenes, digitized speech, great space combat scenes, ships and weapon systems to choose from, countless missions - and ultimately not being such a bad guy after all, since you serve under Thrawn and not Vader... your job being mainly to keep the galaxy in order, fight lawless rebels and pirates. LucasArts was originally known for their adventure games, but with the release of the X-Wing and Tie Fighter series, they left an impressive mark on the 90s space combat genre.

"My name is Manny Calavera. I'm your new travel agent!" Grim Fandango (1998) was a critically acclaimed adventure game developed and published by LucasArts. It was directed and written by Tim Schafer (who was also involved in various other LucasArts games). You play as Manuel "Manny" Calavera, a sharp, chain-smoking skeleton working as a grim reaper/travel agent in the Land of the Dead (the Eighth Underworld). Souls arrive after death and must undertake a four-year journey to the Land of Eternal Rest (the Ninth Underworld, basically heaven). Describing the game's vibe with a single word is impossible. It's a wonderfully unique blend of Film noir (think The Maltese Falcon or Casablanca), Mexican folklore and Day of the Dead aesthetics, with dark comedy elements. In other words: Not your classic LucasArts style. Now, here comes the irony: Grim Fandango is widely seen as the swan song of the golden age of LucasArts-style point-and-click adventures. Costs were gigantic and sales were below expectations, making the game a commercial failure despite massive critical acclaim. LucasArts pulled the plug: After Grim, they only made one more adventure (Escape from Monkey Island in 2000), then largely abandoned the genre. Sine LucasArts was seen as the "leader" in that genre, other publishers followed. The big-studio era of story-rich, puzzle-driven adventures basically ended. Grim Fandango was the peak creatively but its lack of sales proved to executives that the classic formula was no longer profitable in a 3D-action-dominated world (for example Half-Life and Unreal, both also published in 1998). It was a beautiful final masterpiece before the lights went out on that golden era.

STAR WARS hit screens on this day in 1977. It was one of the first films I saw in the theater. Because it was in theaters for over a year (like RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK would be four years later), I can’t be sure if I saw it in 1977 or 1978, but I do know that I was very young. I remember going with my mom, that it was a matinee, and that we sat in the middle. The seats stand out to me because I remember I had to use the restroom in the middle of the climactic battle scene :) I’d see it multiple times in the theater over its run and would see THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK and RETURN OF THE JEDI on their opening weekends. And yes, I remember the marketing for the third film when it was called REVENGE OF THE JEDI. If you did not live through it, it is hard to describe the STAR WARS mania that gripped the country in 1977 and lasted through RETURN OF THE JEDI in 1983. From lines at the theaters to toys to costumes to books to the infamous 1978 STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL, it was an amazing time to be a kid and witness the magic of the movies firsthand through a phenomenon you knew was something extremely special. I can’t be 100% sure that STAR WARS was my first movie in the theater, as during that timeframe I also saw WATERSHIP DOWN (traumatic) and THE RESCUERS (dark) as a double feature with my dad (we had to travel to a city and I found a 9mm bullet in the street – a bullet I still have today), CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND with my grandmother (where I tripped running to the theater with a bowl of popcorn that was almost bigger than I was and spilling it all over the hallway - and I remember how nice the guy was behind the counter who gave us another one for free), and a double feature of ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN and THE BLACK HOLE, but in looking at the dates of those two films I think it was after STAR WARS and that the theater paired an older film (ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN – 1975) with a new film (THE BLACK HOLE – 1979). I just watched the original three films with my youngest son, and it brings me right back…probably the closest I can get to a time machine.

Like a lot of people my age my first adventures in storytelling was playing with Star Wars figures as a kid. So when I did this quick test of kinetix video I tested it out with a Star Wars theme. What you’re seeing on the left is the driving video and staring frame. Then you chose a camera action (Dolly in etc) and write a prompt. Then kinetix aimates your character and moves the camera. It’s great to see performance controled generations coming to AI video and the team have more control coming on the roadmap. I am looking forward to testing out with some original footage and images when I get sometime soon.

The Dig (LucasArts, 1995) didn't achieve the same impact or cult status as Maniac Mansion, Monkey Island, or Indiana Jones, but I devoured it back in the day. In terms of immersion, it was one of LucasArts' best games ever and a milestone of 90s adventure games. It was highly praised by magazines but lost points for high difficulty, making it one of the era's toughest adventure games - and thus diverging from LucasArts' usual style which was usually on the easy/moderate level of difficulty. The visuals and music of The Dig remain incredible, even 30 years later. The large sprites, the amazing choice and composition of colours, the movie like vibe - I found this one to stand out and always wondered why unlike other advneture games this one never got a sequel.

Populous, Theme Park, Dungeon Keeper, Powermonger... but most importantly Syndicate (1993) left a huge mark in the 90s as an isometric real-time tactical and strategic game. It is set in a dystopian future in which corporations have replaced governments and puts the player in control of a corporation fighting for global dominance. You go on countless missions all over the world, eliminate targets, blow up stuff, research weapons and equipment, and upgrade your team of cybernetically modified agents attempting to take control of a particular country. The graphics blew me away at the time, the music and sound effects were spot on, the vibe was very dark/dystopian, and it felt like a very fresh new concept when it was published. I don't think anyone who played games in the 90s would not know Syndicate.
