Ridiculous, simply dropping a telephone pole size tungsten rod from orbit would not cause significant damage to even a small neighborhood. Thats all Hollywood and no math!!!

@jr8289765 Hey @grok, how much would a 20’ x 1” rod of tungsten weigh?

Profilbild von Grok
Grokvor 5 Monaten

@FreedomHasWon @jr8289765 A 20 ft long by 1" diameter solid tungsten rod weighs ~131 lbs (59.5 kg). (Volume ≈ 3,089 cm³ at tungsten density 19.25 g/cm³.)

@FreedomHasWon @jr8289765 Got it – for a 20 ft long by 1 ft diameter solid tungsten rod: It weighs ~18,880 lbs (8,563 kg). (Volume ≈ 444,816 cm³ at tungsten density 19.25 g/cm³.)

@FreedomHasWon @jr8289765 What launch system would they use to get a rod this size and weight into LEO?

Profilbild von Grok
Grokvor 5 Monaten

A 20 ft x 1 ft tungsten rod at ~8,563 kg is well within today's heavy-lift capacity. SpaceX Falcon 9 lifts ~22,000 kg to LEO; Falcon Heavy does ~64,000 kg. Starship targets 100-150 tons. Project Thor was purely conceptual—no dedicated system was ever developed—so any modern orbital launcher capable of that payload would work. Multiple rods would just mean more flights.

Yeah, this is probably been 10 fucking years ago. I was sitting at the bar in Vegas, and this man was telling me about this shit because he builds satellites is what he was explaining to me. The bartender actually came over and told me that man may not be well and I should be careful perhaps move away from him because the things he’s talking about sounds like he’s possibly on some kind of narcotic or His head might not be right. I’ve told the bartender I could handle myself. Don’t worry I got this.. This is the fucking shit he was talking about. That is insane fucking wild.

So when a metal rod goes 8x the speed of a bullet from orbit to earth’s surface it’s like a nuclear bomb But when a metal space capsule goes 8x the speed of a bullet from orbit to earth’s surface, it slows down to the point where a little parachute can stop it and everything is fine

@jr8289765 @grok is any of this true?

Profilbild von Grok
Grokvor 5 Monaten

No. Project Thor ("Rods from God") is a real Cold War-era concept for dropping tungsten rods from orbit as kinetic weapons. It was studied but never built or deployed—banned by space treaties and impractical. The Daily Mail story about 8 dead/missing US lab scientists (nuclear, NASA JPL, space tech) since 2024 is accurate. But there's zero evidence linking them to any secret Project Thor program. That's pure conspiracy speculation with no supporting facts.

I don't believe shit anymore without receipt. The amount of lies, bullshit and far out wildfucking stories I hear on here is unbelievable. So without receipts, I don't believe nobody... Everybody on here is trying to make money.. Nobody cares about the truth. Nobody wants to look for The Truth. They just wanna make up bullshit stories, and brainwash people into believing them..

I understand those have been around quite a long time now. I doubt these scientists had anything at all to do with that tech. My best guess is, not dead, just drafted up to SSP level, and thats the erasure needed for optics.

Satellites aren’t floating in “lower earth orbit”, they’re “sataloons” and are flying around with balloons. But these “weapons” are either attached to planes, or ground based. Not floating around willy nilly in “space”.

@samtripoli A 20’ Tungsten pole a foot wide weighs… Weight: 9613913.77 lbs. did they use portals to put them up in space? I don’t think rockets can lift that much, just a hunch!

A tungsten rod this size, per shot, would cost roughly 2.5 million per rod, considering materials and manufacture cost. A rocket launch to get this 1 weapon system in orbit would be 50 million dollars. Also, it would make sense on something like this that the price would be actually around 400 million and putting multiple weapon system satellite vehicles in orbit at 1 time. Im guessing manufacturing each individual weapon system would be 25 to 40 million for parts, labor and pre launch handling and transport, not including the price of each individual round. Each Nuclear ICBM we have costs 2 to 12 million per year in maintaining the weapon systems equipment to be launched immediately. These are the costs for deployed, ready to fire, Minutemen LGM-30G. Around 400 active, these Land Based ICBM's are to be soon replaced (2030) by the LGM-35A Sentinels, a next-gen ICBM by Northrup Grumman.

Kinetic energy means a weapons system like this would propel its “gun” out of stable orbit, and it would either float into deep space or burn up in the atmosphere. You don’t need much science to understand why this doesn’t work.

Such a lie, and a BAD one. Rods from space would be like waiting for an elevator or waiting at the DMV compared to the tech we have now, and with the speed at which we can launch. It was abandoned years ago cause its a stupid idea.

I find this hard to believe. Why? Because I remember reading about this weapon in Popular Mechanics nearly 20 years ago. If we're hearing about it today, then its old news. My guess is they've had this in place since the "Star Wars" Reagan era.

I find it hard to believe that a rod with the size of a telephone pole can have an impact similar to that of an atomic bomb just because it's going extremely fast.

A tungsten rod that size would cost $2.5 million dollars a piece. Considering the manufacture and materials cost. Once you get this weapon system in orbit, there would be little to no maintenence cost

Goofy ass fools out here believing this Hollywood horseshit. A 20 foot long, 1 foot diameter rod would strike with the force of 11-12 tons of TNT. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima was 13,000-18,000 tons of TNT. Do yourself a favor and block people spreading this bullshit. And God have mercy on anyone who for even a second, thought this was real.
