According to Ridley Scott, Idris Elba briefly believed Denzel Washington had actually shot him while filming this scene in American Gangster. Scott had instructed Elba to lean his forehead against the prop gun so its recoil would produce a convincing physical reaction. The weapon had been specially modified with a sealed barrel, meaning no projectile could pass through it, but it could still create noise and recoil. Scott claims Elba immediately dropped to the pavement and said, “I’ve been shot!” Elba does not appear to have publicly confirmed the story, so it remains Scott’s account of what happened on set. Josh Brolin almost got into a fight with Denzel Washington in American Gangster (2007) During rehearsal, he touched Denzel’s shoulder to prompt him, and Denzel snapped, “Don’t ever f*cking put your hand on me.” Brolin assumed Denzel was in character.

While preparing for American Gangster (2007), Denzel Washington studied the real-life drug lord Frank Lucas and incorporated elements of his quiet demeanor and Southern-inflected speech into the performance.
