Gettysburg, 1993. As we all know, a sad ending but does have some great scenes. Also highly, highly recommend Gods and Generals if you haven’t seen it. Beautiful film.

The funny thing about this british "observer" is he was a real guy, but was on a leave of absence from the army and lying about being sent by the british government to basically spend 3 years in the US for free doing war tourism, and nobody called him out on it.

@KTyrrell1 Pickett was only out for himself & the glory. He salvaged at the thought of making that charge, but when it was over with about 75% of his division killed or wounded, he blamed it all on General Lee.

Indeed. After the war he was talking to John Singleton Mosby and was commenting on how much he still was bitter at Lee for the charge, to which Mosby replied; “Well George, he made you famous.” No responsibility from Pickett, or in my opinion, Longstreet. I still maintain that had Longstreet acted when Lee told him to and not delayed so long, things could have ended differently. Longstreet was known to be a pouter at times when he didn’t get his way and loafed when obeying orders he didn’t agree with. IMO, I think he did that at Gettysburg and it at least played a role, if not was to blame for the failure of the charge.

I live in VA now. My great great grandfather fought for the Union in a MA Regiment at the First Battle of Manassas. Another great great grandfather was a professional US Navy officer who participated in the blockade of the South out of Beaufort, SC. I respect VA’s traditions, but not slavery.

Men are not made like this anymore. These were real men with courage and grit what we have now are sheep who vote for their own oppression.

The Virginians that are left have long since forgot where they came from. This bunch is like lemmings running head long for the cliffs.
