Paul Clancy, R.I.P It is with tremendous sadness that we heard about the sad and untimely passing of our former double All-Ireland Senior Football winning player and Maigh Cuilinn clubman, Paul Clancy. Paul enjoyed a stellar sporting career with the Galway Senior Footballers. He tasted success five times in the Connacht Football championship in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2005. The crowning glory of his senior football career was the winning of the two All-Ireland Senior Football titles with Galway in 1998 and 2001; ending a 32-year famine to return the Sam Maguire Cup to the Tribesmen. As a leader and driving force in his club Cumann Peile Mhaigh Cuilinn, Paul served as Club Chairperson from 2019-2023. During this era, Maigh Cuilinn claimed their first ever Galway Senior Club Football championship title in 2022, this was followed with further success when Maigh Cuilinn added Galway and Connacht senior football titles in 2022. One of his greatest club days as a player was when Maigh Cuilinn captured the All-Ireland Intermediate Football title in 2008. Over the past few years, Paul has contributed to numerous coaching roles. He served as selector with the Galway Senior Football team under Alan Mulholland, the Galway All-Ireland-winning U21 Football team and as a selector with the Laois Senior Football team under Justin McNulty. He has also provided guidance and coaching expertise to several club teams and colleges' football teams. Paul was always readily available to step in and help others on and off the field of play and we are truly indebted to him for his wonderful contribution to the GAA over the past few years. Galway GAA extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife Johanna, children Ellen and Finn, his mother Mary, brother Gearóid, sisters Linda & Ailish, the extended Clancy family, friends, former teammates and the Maigh Cuilinn club community. “Better than winning the lotto” In 2019 as our club stood on the brink of winning a first senior championship in 41 years, Dermot Kerr kindly agreed to help with a piece of filming ahead of the match. It wasn’t his thing, but he was happy to help. He died today. A lovely man, head of one of the pillar families in our town. We won the match that day, he was super proud of his two grandsons, and all his fine family. We’ve all lost a piece of Magherafelt. Thoughts with all the Kerr clan❤️

I have been entrusted with the painful duty by a senior member of our profession to announce to my professional colleagues in Zimbabwe and beyond the passing of Zimbabwean journalist Lewis Machipisa, who died in London today. Lewis and I were classmates at journalism school at the Zimbabwe Institute of Mass Communications. Our paths crossed again at the BBC World Service in 2003 when he moved to London, and I was returning to Zimbabwe. He lived in London until today when he passed on. I am deeply saddened by his passing and extend my condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. May his soul rest in peace.

Please spare a thought for Michael Ward, who was born on this day (yesterday, sorry Michael!) in Carnmenellis, Cornwall in 1909. Michael was the very first actor I plucked up the courage to contact for an interview, way back in April 1989. He’d recently celebrated his 80’s birthday yet was wheelchair bound, had no family and had basically been forgotten about by the industry. As well as getting my interview we became firm friends and I kind of looked after him for the last eight years of his life. Every Sunday I’d arrive at his flat in Maida Vale and take him to my mum’s place where we’d have lunch and watch videos of some of the films he was in. Apart from the odd television repeat I don’t think he’d really seen himself on TV much and as the memories came flooding back he’d reel off story after story. One of my last memories of Michael happened shortly before he died in 1997. He’d decided to grow a beard and when I saw him I said something along the lines of, ‘My word, you look very distinguished’. ‘Surely you mean extinguished,’ he replied.

During the 2025 U.S. Chess & U.S. Women’s Championship, the sudden passing of GM Daniel Naroditsky deeply affected everyone in the chess community. At the closing ceremony, Rex Sinquefield spoke with heartfelt emotion about Daniel’s legacy and the inspiration he brought to so many. On this date in 1999, while performing “Earth Song” in Munich, Germany during the MJ & Friends benefit concert, Michael was standing on a steel footbridge when it fell down and hit the ground below stage level. He was visibly shocked but climbed back onstage and continued his performance without showing signs of distress or pain. MJ suffered chest injuries as well as back strains, after finishing the song he returned to his his dressing room where he collapsed before being rushed to the hospital.
