She was killed on Friday, January 9, by the repressive forces of the Islamic Republic regime during the protests in the city. She was shot in the throat; Security institutions attempted to distort the cause of her death by claiming it was due to cardiac arrest, an assertion that contradicts eyewitness accounts. Ari Aster on why he considers "Midsommar" (2019) to be a fairy tale: "I see the film as a fairy tale more than anything else. It does have a structure of a fairy tale. If you’re just looking at Dani’s trajectory, and she is the person we’re most aligned with, at the beginning she loses a family and at the end she gains one. Part of the fun of making this film was making a film that functioned for most of the visitors as a folk horror film, but for the [character] that we’re most joined to it’s something else. It ends up revealing itself as a perverse wish fulfillment fantasy. It’s doing two things at once. You could see this place as being a real lived-in place with a rich history and deep traditions, or you could watch the movie in a way that has this community function strictly as a manifestation of Dani’s will: they’re only here to provide her all of the needs she’s being denied." (Ari Aster's interview with A.E. Hunt, Filmmaker, 2019) P.S: On this day, 7 years ago, "Midsommar" (2019) premiered in Los Angeles, California.

The Other Side of the Underneath 1972 Rarely is the making of a film as insane as the film. Writer director Jane Arden was very troubled, the cast was on acid, disabled people were used as actors, and several people died or went insane. The film is brilliant but disturbing.

When Nikkatsu studio executives saw the finished cut of Seijun Suzuki's "Branded to Ki!!" (1967), they thought it was too terrible to be released, so they shelved it. Suzuki along with others in the film business, film critics, and students protested in unfairness since, by contract, Nikkatsu was supposed to release the finished film theatrically. It went to court, with a ruling in favor of the director. Nikkatsu had to pay for damages and have the film released. Suzuki's contract with Nikkatsu was terminated, and with the bad reputation, was unable to work on a feature film for the next 10 years. (Source: IMDb)

#WATCH | Mumbai: On her film Emergency, actress Kangana Ranaut says "There was a lot of struggle. You must have seen no one could ever make a film on Mrs Gandhi (Indira Gandhi)...There was a film 'Kissa Kursi Ka', Director of that film had to commit suicide and such a situation was created for him. We got the courage to do this film because there is freedom of speech today. We had to show this film to several communities. This film had to go through a lot of scrutiny. We have a lot of faith in our Constitution and the Censor Board and we are happy and eager to show this film to the world...I had no idea that I would have to go through all of this while making my film Emergency..."

Emily Blunt was originally attached to reprise her role from "Sicario" (2015) as FBI Agent Kate Macer in the sequel. However, once director Stefano Sollima was attached to the film, he ultimately decided not to use Blunt or her character in the film, noting that Macer represented the moral compass in "Sicario" (2015), whereas he did not want any character to serve as moral guidance in the sequel. Screenwriter Taylor Sheridan, who wrote the story and screenplay for both films, also stated in interviews that he could not think of a reason to keep Agent Macer in the second film, and that her character's story had already come full circle in the first installment. THE WAY WE WERE was a smash hit when it was released in 1973 and has endured over the years as one of the great love stories in cinema. The film was the first and only time that Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand, two of the world's biggest movie stars at the time, ever appeared in a film together. The on-screen coupling of such opposite and dynamic talents caused quite a stir and captured the imagination of the movie-going public. Redford was already a movie star when he made the film, but it's success solidified him as the world's leading male sex symbol of his era. It took him to a new level of fame that secured his place as an enduring Hollywood icon.

According to an interview with Samuel L. Jackson, he and writer and director John Singleton often argued over the direction of the film. After one particular argument, Singleton refused to come out of his trailer. Christian Bale didn't have any interest in playing the part of the villain, as he had just finished making American Psycho (2000). But he was reading through lines with Toni Collette, who has the part of the witness in the film, one day, and decided to give it a go as another villain after all. 🎬 SHAFT (2000)

On this day, 53 years ago, Robert Altman's "The Long Goodbye" (1973) premiered in Los Angeles, California, USA. Robert Altman on the disappointing opening of "The Long Goodbye" (1973) & why Elliot Gould was the perfect Marlowe: "When the picture opened, it was a big, big flop. It opened in Los Angeles and Chicago and a few other cities, and the ad campaign was Elliott with a cat on his shoulder, a smoking .45 and a cigarette in his mouth, with Nina as a slick blonde beside him. And it just failed. I went to David Picker and said, ‘You can’t do this. No wonder the fucking picture is failing. It’s giving the wrong impression. You make it look like a thriller and it’s not, it’s a satire.’ So they pulled the film, and we got Jack Davis from Mad magazine to do a new poster with all the characters, and we opened it in New York and it was a smash hit. By the time that happened, it was too late for Los Angeles and those other cities. If New York had been our first opening, we would have had a successful film. But the film has stood up over the years, in a strange way. Some British critics didn’t like Elliott Gould playing Philip Marlowe, and I was confused about that, because I had read a lot of the books, and what Chandler wrote was really a bunch of thumbnail sketches or thematic essays, all about Los Angeles, and Marlowe was just a device to unite them, and I felt we were very close to that. Everyone said Elliott’s not Philip Marlowe and I wasn’t being true to the author, but what they were really saying was that Elliott Gould wasn’t Humphrey Bogart. In fact, I believe we were closer to Chandler’s character than any of the other renditions, where they made him a kind of movie superhero." ('Altman on Altman', Edited by David Thompson, 2006)

“Passion was one of the most important records for me – an opportunity as a writer to try to do a different sort of job than I usually do. The brief for ‘The Last Temptation Of Christ’ was to create something that had references to that time and that part of the world, but that had its own character and was to be timeless in a way.” - PG. This track ‘Zaar’ was written around a traditional Egyptian rhythm which is performed to fend off evil spirits. The video was directed by Stefan Roloff using images from his film ‘Lunch’.
