Remembering the great Gene Hackman on his 96th birthday! Mississippi Burning (1988) Director: Alan Parker
Комментарии: 29

Legend... ***Gene Hackman popping up as the blind man in Young Frankenstein...

I loved him in this movie. He and W. Defoe were great together

Mississippi Burning (1988), directed by Alan Parker, is a perfect place to stop and look back. Hackman’s Rupert Anderson isn’t heroic in the traditional sense, nor is he clean, comfortable or reassuring. He’s a man shaped by experience, instinct and moral fatigue — someone who understands that justice, in the real world, is rarely polite and never simple. What Hackman does here is something few actors manage: he gives authority without vanity, intensity without noise. He doesn’t ask for sympathy; he earns attention. His performance feels lived-in, scarred, quietly dangerous — as if the character existed long before the camera arrived and would carry on after it left. In Mississippi Burning, the film’s anger and moral urgency are obvious, but Hackman grounds it. He brings weight, contradiction and an unsettling calm that makes the story hit harder. You don’t just watch the fight against hatred and corruption — you feel the cost of confronting it. Hackman was never about charm for its own sake. He was about truth, friction, and the uncomfortable humanity of flawed men. That’s why his performances endure. They don’t age, because they were never trying to be liked.

I watched Get Shorty (1995) last night. Drama, comedy, he could do it all.

Hackman in The Conversation is the blueprint for the modern paranoid thriller. No one has done it better since.

Love this movie, i must have seen it about 50 times i haven't seen in for about 20 years on dvd, i might give a watch over the weekend

pretty snappy screen writing in this scene

He was as good as they get.

This movie is comprised of Hackman, Dafoe, black people, and the most comically racist whites alive. It’s as though the white citizens of mid-60s Mississippi have no interests in food, football, the weather, mystery novels, or gardening. Their sole hobby is hate.

A great actor in a great film. Mr. Hackman and Mr. Dafoe work so well together.

He brought any scene down to the ground, like talking to the guys in the hardware store. Only with far greater impact.

On what "would have been" his 96th birthday.

Gene Hackman said of his role that "it felt right to do something of historical importance. It was an extremely intense experience, both the content of the film and the making of it in Mississippi".

Uncommon Valor, underrated
