Remembering the great Vi Redd who was born on this day in 1928. The first female instrumentalist to headline at a jazz festival, Redd was a gifted saxophonist and singer. Her saxophone style was mellow with a bright, effortless swing. She demonstrated intentional melodic phrasing to accommodate the rapid... chord progressions while maintaining swing within the songs. She created emotional swells through emphatic phrasing, carefully adding just enough embellishment to subtly, but definitively, convey the meaning of the songs. In spite of the fact that she became an accomplished saxophonist who performed with well-known artists such as Count Basie, Dizzy Gillespie, and Max Roach, she only had two commercially recorded albums. This was at least in part due to the assumption that female musicians wouldn't be commercially successful. Even though she only had two albums recorded, they are excellent illustrations of her mastery of jazz music. Redd’s dedication to and mastery of jazz music has paved the way for many other talented ladies. Hazel Dorothy Scott was an internationally known jazz and classical pianist and singer; she also performed as herself in several films. She was prominent as a jazz singer throughout the 1930s and 1940s. In 1950, she became the 1st woman of color to have her own TV show, The Hazel Scott Show, featuring a variety of entertainment. To evade the political persecution of artists in the McCarthy era, Scott moved to Paris in the late 1950s and performed in France, not returning to the United States until 1967. Born in Port of Spain, Hazel was taken at the age of four by her mother to New York. Recognized early as a musical prodigy, Scott was given scholarships from the age of eight to study at the Juilliard School. She began performing in a jazz band in her teens and was performing on radio at age 16. On October 2, 1981, Hazel Scott died of cancer at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. She was 61 years old, and survived by her son Adam Clayton Powell III. She was buried at Flushing Cemetery in Queens, New York, near other musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Johnny Hodges, and Dizzy Gillespie. Hawkins was one of the first jazz horn players with a full understanding of intricate chord progressions, and he influenced many of the great saxophonists of the swing era including Ben Webster and Chu Berry as well as leading figures in modern jazz, such as Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane. His deep, full-bodied tone and quick vibrato (trembling of a note achieved by slight variations of pitch) was the expected style on jazz tenor saxophone until the advent of Lester Young in the mid-1930s, and even after Young’s appearance many players continued to absorb Hawkins’s approach. For the next year she sang upstairs while Holiday performed downstairs, and during this time she adopted the name that would define her career. Remembering the great Charles Mingus who was born on this day in 1922. Considered to be one of the greatest jazz musicians and composers of all time, Mingus was a major proponent of collective improvisation. In the 1950s, he introduced a new musical device to facilitate his style of composing and playing: the jazz workshop. The music for the first jazz workshops in 1953 had generally been written down before the performance. He felt that improvisation was so intrinsic to jazz that a musician should not be restricted to written scores. As a performer, Mingus was a pioneer in double bass technique, widely recognized as one of the instrument’s most proficient players. In his improvisations Tatum was given to spontaneously inserting entirely new chord progressions into the small space of one or two measures. His reharmonization of pop tunes became a standard practice among modern jazz musicians, horn players as well as pianists. In rhythmically unpredictable spurts, he often generated lines with notes cascading across each other while weaving in and out of tempo. Few jazz pianists after Tatum failed to incorporate at least one favourite Tatum run or embellishment in their playing. Several jazz pianists—including Bud Powell, Lennie Tristano, and Oscar Peterson—as well as other jazz musicians credited and clearly exhibited Tatum’s influence. One of the most original, intuitive and exciting pianists to emerge during the modern jazz era, Garner was one of the most well known and influential pianists in the world during his lifetime. By all accounts self-taught, Garner never studied music formally and never learned to read music. Nevertheless, he possessed dazzling technique and a totally unique playing style, including his trademark “strumming” of the chords he played with his right hand. He was an outstanding improviser who made full use of the piano keyboard, imparting a lush, orchestral feel to his interpretations of popular songs. Garner’s own jazz piano compositions include Blues Garni, Erroll’s Bounce, and his most famous piece, Misty, which became a jazz standard. He released music on over 40 labels, received multiple Grammy nominations, and recorded one of the greatest selling jazz albums of all time, Concert By The Sea which was released in 1955.
