Remembering Audrey Hepburn on her 97th birthday! Paramount originally wanted to shoot "Roman Holiday" (1953) in Hollywood. William Wyler refused, insisting it must be shot on location. They finally agreed, but with a much lower budget. This meant the movie would be in black and white, not the expected Technicolor, and he would need to cast an unknown actress as the Princess, Audrey Hepburn. She went on to win an Oscar for the role. Katharine Hepburn falls into a canal in Campo San Barnaba, Venice, in this scene from Summertime (1955). Although warned about the dangers of the polluted water in the canals, Hepburn insisted on doing her own stunt work. Passersby were informed that she was in fact an excellent swimmer, so they weren't to be alarmed when she tipped into the water. The scene was filmed 3 times, and as a consequence Hepburn contracted a bad eye infection which stuck with her for the rest of her life.
