In her 2016 CFDA Fashion Icon Award acceptance speech, Beyoncé said “when we were starting out in Destiny’s Child, high-end labels didn’t really wanna dress four black country-curvy girls, and we couldn’t afford designer dresses and couture,” and how Mama Tina and Uncle Johnny designed and made each piece by hand, individually sewing hundreds of crystals and pearls. In 2023, Beyoncé co-created her own couture collection with Olivier from the house of Balmain, becoming the first ever Black woman to oversee the couture offering from an historic Parisian house.
