Last night on NDTV, I asked the NTA director, courtesy Shiv Aroor. There are 5 questions that bother me on the NEET paper leak and I asked: 1. Public MBBS seat costs about Rs.5 lacs while a private one costs Rs.1.5 crores. The financial incentive for families and brokers is far too high. How do you counter the imbalance? 2. NEET is pen & paper exam. The physical paper is transported to 5000+ Centers and at least 200,000 hands. The time gap is often weeks before the exam. How do we solve this? 3. Only NTA knows the extent of the leak. The fact that they cancelled the exam means it is substantial. What was the extent of the leak? 4. Was anyone punished for the 2024 leak fiasco? Can we have a white paper on what we learnt from 2024? 5. Can India reduce the dependence on a single entrance exam that determines the fate of students? If we have 50% weightage for school scores, we can curb the coaching mafia menace..

NEET CANCELLED: A Global Power That Cannot Hold A Fair Exam. In this "RAW DISPATCH FROM MY DESK" i reflect on Twenty-three lakh students or 2.3 million students who will not sleep well tonight in one of the world’s fastest rising powers. Why? Because the government finds it difficult to ensure the integrity of an exam that will decide the course of their lives. Yes, for all its pretensions of being a world power, India cannot hold an exam without the fear of a question paper leak. The NEET exam for 2026 now stands cancelled and the students will be re-tested, re-traumatised. All it took was a paltry sum of Rs 5 lakhs to ensure that cheats got hold of the paper or at least large sections of it that reportedly matched the actual NEET paper “word for word, comma for comma”. The NEET ecosystem has repeatedly faced allegations of leaks, malpractice and compromised integrity over the past decade. Investigators claim that the paper was circulating days before the exam in WhatsApp groups as a “guess paper”. The question is how did a paper allegedly copied at a printing press in Nashik travel across multiple states including Maharashtra, Haryana, Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, Bihar and Kerala without the NTA detecting a single breach? And if the paper is so easily accessed every so often, isn’t it evident that organised rackets have penetrated India’s examination ecosystem under the NTA’s watch? What is surprising is that not one top NTA official has offered to hold him or herself to account. Not one has offered to step down voluntarily. In fact, when the question was repeatedly asked of Abhishek Singh, the DG of the NTA , he was evasive. The point is a simple one: given the scale of its repeated failures, does the NTA understand that every leak destroys not just an exam, but public faith in the idea of fair competition itself? The Modi government prides itself on ensuring that every ordinary Indian gets a level playing field. It must now ask itself whether it is living up to that commitment made to the people.

The UGC NET exam was held on 18th June 2024 and cancelled next day. About 9.18 lac students took the exam. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination centre (I4C) disclosed that the exam paper was available on dark web on 17th June, a day before the exam day. The MoE confirmed that exam paper was being sold for Rs.5000 on telegram channels a day before the exam date. The CBI concluded there was no actual paper leak and filed a closure report. The entire episode was traced back to a school student who doctored a screenshot of the genuine UGC-NET question paper from 18 June 2024, backdating it to 17 June, to give the impression he had obtained it a day before the exam. The UGC NET 2024 was conducted all over again because I4C and MoE raised a false alarm to cancel an exam. And 9 lac students suffered!!

The most damning paper leak story in this entire debate is about a Congress minister whose own office was leaking exam papers. 2016, Karnataka, Congress in power. Class 12 Chemistry paper leaks. Re-exam paper leaks too. Exam cancelled twice. Leak double, trauma triple. CID arrests the minister's own PA for leaking paper. No resignation follows, just an excuse. Fast forward to 2026, that same minister runs the same department again today, under Congress Govt in Karnataka. These are the standards of accountability of the Congress.

This person showed me a PDF which had a few questions from Chemistry. We also asked a teacher to tally 90 Biology questions with those in NEET exam paper; those too matched. We approached NTA with the details, and they acted fast. 2 lakh students pulled out from the Re NEET exam. Where did these 2 lakh students go?
