There is no one right answer when they did not state the material the rope is made up of and its weight. How about wind direction? Cold or hot environment? Winter? Summer?

Watch the full video here

What about a less strong and lighter rope?

My guess was C, but I can live with the answer being B.

What was the accepted answer? I guess the catch word is “as” not “when” my initial instinct was D.

“Perfectly flexible” doesn’t sound like a very scientific term. And the question doesn’t state whether the helicopter is accelerating or moving at a constant speed.

Now you guys should re-do the technique that Nate Saint used to drop a bucket vertically into a jungle from a plane and back up again. Because that is an amazing practical thing to come up with and implement.

If air resistance is ignored and it is only going forward without acceleration shouldnt the rope just hang straight down?

negligible. Hopefully it was spelled correctly on the test!

Neat experiment. Please explain how you rendered the air resistance on the rope to zero though.

Assume constant wind force across rope. As perfectly flexible, the net vector force of gravity+wind applied to any point must be parallel to the rope. The applied wind+gravity vector has a constant direction, so the angle of the rope must be constant. Tension is already parallel.

Shit. I should have gone with my first answer

Let’s go I got it

Spelling of negligible was incorrect in the question

Listen bro, I love this approach, but you could have just done this with a toy helicopter, a string and your backyard.

E

Is this just a question of does the rate of acceleration have a linear relationship to the mass of the object

Can you correct this video please? Centrifugal forces can not exist without the correstonding centripetal forces.

I thought C. I assumed the weight of the rope would keep the rope fairly straight at the top and curve as the weight lightens.

Great 👍

Yeah, but you didn’t tell us what the exam had marked as the correct answer? Were they correct or not?

B

Superb!

B was my instinct

If the rope is 30,000 feet, do we assume the drag on it would be the same at all points? Remember the higher you go the thinner the air

Weighted rope 20kg makes a difference?

It's still wrong answer.

Fuck i said (d), because higher momentum the higher you get up. Then changed it and had som trouble, ended up changing to wrong answer Because u can clearly see (d) is the right answer, the (cable is just to short/ speed to low) to show (d) really well.

I imagined B, them changed answer to D 😭 I then tried to justify my reasoning using anchors, as in "the bottom of the chain is heavier" but that didn't actually even make sense hahaha
