Rep. Brett Guthrie on Medicaid cuts: "There was an AEI study that studied this group of people who are able-bodied and not working. It said they spend over 6 hours a day on video games and socializing. That's just not fair."

These able bodied people spent most of last year attending Trump rallies rather than working.

They’re constantly shifting the narrative. So the new metric for healthcare access is… how many hours someone spends not working? Sounds less like policy and more like punishment. Medicaid is a lifeline, not a reward for productivity. And citing a think tank study about video games to justify cutting healthcare is not serious governance. It’s moralizing with a budget axe.

The study actually covers broader leisure activities, including TV, and ignores that 64% of Medicaid recipients work or face barriers like caregiving or disabilities. His push for Medicaid cuts, saving $715 billion to fund tax cuts, risks harming vulnerable Kentuckians, 1 in 3 rely on the program, based on a misleading stereotype

Rep. Guthrie’s claim oversimplifies Medicaid cuts. The AEI study he cites may exaggerate screen time for "able-bodied" adults, ignoring structural barriers to work. Fairness demands nuance, not stereotypes. Cuts risk harming vulnerable people.

A classic phantom political war… designed to brand a vague type of American as the enemy and the reason for their actions.
