Who Died During the Riot? The 16 deaths during the riot were: • 11 white civilians (including a child, a 16-year-old, and Captain Joseph Mattes of the Illinois National Guard, who was mistaken for a mounted policeman) • 5 white policemen (including Rufus Daniels, one of the officers involved in the Travers arrest) • 5 soldiers also died (4 from friendly fire, 1 suicide) So the soldiers killed 16 people during the riot. That part isn't disputed.

A black man was beaten up by the police and these black soldiers first instinct was to grab a gun and go kill people. Low impulse control is in their DNA. These people cannot be civilized in the army, knew it.
