Repeat after me: individual actions will not solve the climate crisis 🙅♀️ Narratives such as "technology will save us" and "it's up to individuals to change their habits" are just as insidious as outright climate denial. We must keep our attention on where power lies... (1/2)

... and the institutions with a vested interest in maintaining business as usual. It's not scary to talk about systemic change. It IS scary to pretend there's hope in another 10 years of incrementalism. Chatting all things #climate with @MGawdat

If people hadn’t rallied against technology decades ago, it wouldn’t be needed to save us now.

Technology is literally the only way we can solve climate change.

Individual actions can't substitute for system change, but they do provide a moral authority. Imagine going into a general store to demand they stop selling tobacco & then end with "I'll have 20 Marlboro' thanks!" The shopkeeper would ignore you, as it's the $ that count.. 1/..

Nothing will 'solve' the climate crises. It's not a 'linear problem' requiring a fix. If individuals don't change their attitude and keep demanding the same type of convenience as till now, why would they put up with others changing the system in an 'unfavourable' direction?

Capitalism is geared toward the consumer, they must decide where purchases happen in a free market Vote to incentivize nuclear energy Technology is primary solution, as has always been, otherwise cull population one way or another :/ @jordanbpeterson @shellenberger @Timcast

@Tzeporah Individual action is important... as a means to raise awareness and galvanize systemic climate actions. What we can do singly isn't effective at the scale of the problems. It can, however, act like a chemical catalyst, which uses a little energy to start/sustain big reactions.

I disagree. We need a critical mass of people to say: constant flying isnt ok, eating endless amounts of meat isnt ok. When it reaches 25%, its a tipping point: everyone else follows. Power does what people want, ultimately, and if not enough people want change, it wont happen.

Statements that "x will not solve our crises" are too simplistic! We clearly need systemic *and* Individual actions - and if we don't take the latter they will be forced upon us, in far more catastrophic circumstances. See for instance this thread:
