"The more successful you become, that increases the rate of imposter syndrome. There's way more imposter syndrome at Harvard than there is at the University of Texas..." Achieving high-level success often fails to provide the emotional security people expect. In fact, it frequently produces the opposite. The higher you climb, the more you doubt whether you belong. So if success doesn't produce confidence, what does? "Confidence doesn't come from success. It comes from surviving failure." He explains that confidence is internal. It's not something anyone else gives you. Once you believe in yourself, other people can think whatever they want. Dr. Kanojia draws a sharp distinction between confidence and ego, and it shows up most clearly in how someone handles criticism: "If you criticize an egotistical person, they will argue with you and convince you that you're wrong and call you stupid. Whereas, if you're confident, someone says, 'Hey, you're an idiot.' I can say, 'Okay, help me understand why.' Like, I could be an idiot. Help me understand." That's the difference. Ego is brittle. It needs external validation and collapses under scrutiny. Confidence is internal, which means it can absorb criticism without breaking. And it's only ever built through surviving failure.
